Fire at South Salem Temple Believed to be a Hate Crime

The Temple, located at 860 Oakhill Ave SE is the former home of the Good Shepard Lutheran Church.

(SALEM) - Investigators believe an early morning fire and uprooting of a flagpole Saturday at the Dashmesh Darbar Sikh Temple in south Salem was a hate crime.

Investigators say a 4-foot flag with Khanda, the symbol of the Sikh faith was burned. The fire also spread to some nearby grass and a chain link fence that surrounded the flag pole, but was quickly extinguished.

Unfortunately, due to the events of September, 11, 2001, many Sikhs have been misidentified as Muslim extremists because their dress is similar to to that affected by Osama bin Laden. Many have been harassed, assaulted, or even killed.

Woman Dies in Crash on Butteville Road

(SALEM) - Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a fatal traffic crash Saturday just before 7:00 PM in the 16000 block of Butteville Road near the cross with Highway 219. The situation was reported as a passenger car vs. semi crash.

Center Street Bridge Replacement Project Going As Planned

The Center Street Bridge project is scheduled to be completed by October.

(SALEM) - The Center Street Bridge demolition project is going according to plan, say city and project leaders. City of Salem Public Works spokesman Mike Gotterba says a creek diversion is in place which will allow crews to remove what was the bridge’s center pier.

Parking Changes Begin Saturday at Salem Hospital

(SALEM) - Beginning Saturday, the Oak and Capitol Street SE parking lot at Salem Hospital will close. Patients and visitors to the hospital campus should use the parking garage and shuttle service as an alternative.

The free shuttle is available weekdays from 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM and on weekends from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Patients and visitors with mobility impairments are encouraged to use the free valet-parking service, available weekdays, 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM.

The lot that is closing sits between the Family Birth Center and the remaining parking garage.

Many people currently use a short cut through the parking lot to travel between the parking garage and several campus buildings.

Hawthorne Ave NE Between Silverton Rd NE and Sunnyview Rd NE. Lane closure with flaggers for chip sealing of roadway and sweeping of loose rock.

Hawthorne Ave NE Between Market St NE and Sunnyview Ave SE. Hawthorne Ave reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted to one side of the street. This lane closure is for installation of utilities for new development. Project is scheduled to be completed on Friday.

Salem-area residents Friday, who weren’t at work, were seeking shade, air conditioning, or anything cool to beat the 102 degree temperature.

Bank and business temperature signs read anywhere from 103 in Keizer, 105 in downtown and south Salem.

(SALEM) - Salem police and the Salem Fire Department are investigating what they call a suspicious fire that occurred around 6:30 AM Saturday at the Good Shepard Lutheran Church on Oakhill Ave SE.

A Suspicious Death in Gladstone is Being Handled by the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team

(GLADSTONE) - The Gladstone Police were dispatched to 250 W. Arlington on a female who was unconscious and not breathing. Police found that she was deceased and termed it as a "suspicious death."

The Clackamas County Major Crimes Team was activated and will now be investigating and collecting evidence at the crime scene over the next several hours.

Police have no current suspects and are interviewing the woman's two roommates who found their friend deceased when they returned home from work.

Washington Mother Arrested After Leaving Kids in Hot Car

(VANCOUVER, Wa.) - Several people called Vancouver, Washington Police Friday afternoon when a car with two boys inside was left parked in the direct sun.

Officers arrived at the Target Store on SE Mill Plain just before 1:00 PM, responding the the 911 calls advising of two small boys, ages 6 and 9, who were left alone in a vehicle.

Salem Police Lt. Chuck Bennett says the incident in Vancouver is on the minds of cops and firefighters all over the Nortwest, "Another thing people need to remember is that like children, pets in hot cars can't be left unattended either."
