Worshipers at South Salem Temple Believe the Burning of Their Flag is an Act of Terrorism

Recent vandalism at the Sikh temple has left many in Salem angry and shaken, and the organization trying to educate people about who they are and why they are not a threat.

(SALEM) - People who worship at the Dashmesh Darbar Sikh Temple on Oakhill Ave SE in South Salem say the violent and destructive acts committed against their building over the weekend amounts to more than a hate crime, they say it was an act of terrorism.

The desecration of the former Lutheran church is definetely not the first hate crime...

(SALEM) - ODOT crews will be conducting paving work on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 between the North Jefferson and Turner exits each week night. The B and C lanes between mileposts 245 and 247 will be closed to traffic, with barriers in place. All work will take place from 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM Monday through Thursday nights.

Westlund Campaign Submits First Batch of Signatures to Counties

Over 36,000 Oregonians Support Westlund’s Campaign to Get on the Ballot.

(BEND) - Senator Ben Westlund’s quest to qualify for the fall ballot as an Independent candidate for Governor reaches a major milestone this week as the campaign begins submitting signatures to county clerks for signature verification.

The campaign has already gathered over 36,000 signatures statewide and needs to submit 18,368 valid signatures to the Secretary of State by August 29th to qualify for a spot on the November ballot.

“We have launched one of the most comprehensive statewide grassroots campaigns in the history of Oregon,” said Westlund. “Establishing and maintaining direct contact with Oregon’s voters is a huge advantage for us and the tens of thousands of signatures we have obtained so far is a product of our top-notch team of statewide staff and volunteers.”

Ammonia Leak Forces Detours

Salem's special hazardous materials team joined other crews responding to the leak.

(SALEM) - Salem firefighters were called out to an early Monday morning ammonia leak at the Deluxe Ice Cream company at 19th and State St in Salem.

Fire Spokesman Joe Parrott says crews rolled out at 5:48 AM to handle the leaking ammonia that is used as the coolant in the ice cream company's refrigeration system.

The leak was isolated to a relief valve according to Parrott. The leak was stopped at about 6:30 AM.

Wyden, Smith Secure Funding for Oregon Projects Through Defense Bill

Oregon nanotechnology efforts receive Appropriations Committee funding approval; other funded programs include a variety of defense-related projects throughout the state.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith today announced that the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has approved millions of dollars in funding for defense-related projects in Oregon, including significant funding for a number of Oregon nanotechnology projects through the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI).

“Funding for Oregon's new nanotechnology research center, as well as numerous other nanotech projects, demonstrates that our state is truly a national leader in this growing field," Wyden said. “The targeted investments we're making in basic research and innovative projects will provide a significant boost to Oregon’s economy and further develop technologies that have important applications in saving lives, for our national defense, and for civilian use.”

Op-Ed: Nanotechnology Heavily Funded as People Suffer

As Oregon struggles to feed and care for its citizens, millions will be invested in companies that build military equipment. The word is nanotechnhology and it has little to do with making life better for people here.

(SALEM) - One of the terms the Bush administration has brought forward in recent years is nanotechnology, and now Oregon learns that billions of dollars will come to our state to help develop the various different nanotechnologies that our nation is using to build its military might in a time of war.

That sounds good right?

What it means in reality, is that all sorts of private companies are going to receive big bucks to do things like lining Freightliner trucks with armor, they get $35 million for that.

Six Escape Fast Burning Structure Fire in Canby

One of the people who made it out safely was a man who was physically disabled.

(CANBY) - Firefighters were called out early Monday morning to a fire located at 1470 NE 11th Ave, in Canby. When fire crews pulled their apparatus out of the station they reported seeing a large column of smoke and a glow in the sky, "We knew we had a working fire," said first arriving Captain, Chip Bryant.

Division Chief Troy Buzalsky says that upon arrival, crews sized up the situation, which included speaking with the homeowners, Steve and Ronda Stone. The Stone's reported that all 6 people residing in the home had safely escaped… thanks to their smoke alarm,

Strange Fish Found on Beach Near Seaside

The extremely rare fish's name stems from Indian lore when it was believed that the King of the Salmon led the smaller species back to the rivers to spawn.

(SEASIDE) - There was a strange find on the Oregon coast this weekend, not too far from Seaside. Keith Chandler and Tiffany Boothe, of the Seaside Aquarium, say they got a tip about a strange fish that washed up at Sunset Beach, just south of Astoria and it led to a most unusual discovery.

Boothe and Chandler went to the beach and discovered a very rare find: a fish called King-of-the-Salmon (Trachipterus Altivelis), which normally lives around 1600 feet under the sea.

“He belongs to the family of Ribbonfish,” Boothe said. “There are four other species of Ribbonfish along our coast, but the King-of-the-Salmon is the largest; growing up to and possibly exceeding six feet.

Keizer Apartment Fire a Close Call

Nobody was hurt in the fire that investigators say was started with fireworks.

(KEIZER) - Firefighters in Keizer were able to keep a fire from entering the units at an apartment complex Sunday, but the blaze that started in some shrubs at the Churchdale Apartments set fire to another home and a car before it was over.

Keizer Fire's Rod Conway says the District was dispatched at 5:22 PM Sunday to the Churchdale Apartments where bushes were reportedly on fire, with later reports of an apartment on fire. It was reported that a local youth had thrown burning fireworks into the bush, starting the fire.

Conway says Keizer Fire sent several units and were backed up by Marion County Fire District #1 for mutual aid. Conway says a total of 15 fire personnel were on-scene.

Keizer Fire District crews arrived at 218 Churchdale Ave N to find arborvitae shrubs on fire, as well as the deck to one unit.

Nine Arrested Following Disturbance at Concert on State Fairgrounds

Police arriving on the scene appeared to set off several fights, but some who attended suggest that the use of the term "Riot" is over the line.

(SALEM) - Eight adults and one juvenile were taken into custody by Oregon State Police and Salem Police Saturday evening after several fights broke out during a Hispanic Concert and dance held on State Fairgrounds property in Salem.

One person was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and the event was shut down following the incident.

Tensions in the local Hispanic community have been rising, particularly since a local Spanish radio station, "La Pantera" was banned from taking part in the Marion County Fair in Salem.
