Albany Fire Department to Crackdown on Illegal Fireworks

Oregon law bans the possession, use, or sale of fireworks that allow packaging to fly, explode, or travel more than six feet on the ground or 12 inches in the air.

(ALBANY) - The Albany Fire Department will be responding to illegal fireworks complaints starting the evening of June 30th through the 4th of July.

Legal fireworks may be purchased only from Oregon permitted fireworks retailers and stands.

Examples of illegal fireworks are bottle rockets, roman candles, M80's, and firecrackers. Under Oregon law officials may seize illegal fireworks, fine up to $500 per violation, or arrest offenders for possession of illegal fireworks and endangering life and property.

Be Aware! Oregon School Zone Speed Limits Change on Saturday

House Bill 2840, passed by the 2005 Legislature changes the law in some school zones.

(SALEM) - Oregon law will continue to require drivers to slow to 20 mph in school zones where flashing lights indicate children may be arriving at or leaving school.

What will change over the summer is that if a school zone has no flashing lights, the 20 mph speed limit will apply from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on days when school is in session.

One simple rule of thumb will always work: Follow the signs, and when in doubt, slow down.

6 Arson Fires in Salem During June

(SALEM) - Salem Fire Investigators along with Salem Police Detectives have been very busy looking for the arsonist or arsonists who where involved in six separate fires in the Salem area during the month of June.

Local Red Cross Volunteers to Assist Flooding Victims

The volunteers have been trained to help families rebuild their lives following disasters.

(SALEM) - Three volunteers from the Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross in Salem will head east to assist victims in a disaster zone. The volunteers received three-week assignments to deliver assistance to flood victims in Wilksboro, Pennsylvania.

On Thursday, 700 Red Cross disaster relief workers were requested to deploy to East Coast areas affected by flooding.

Friday afternoon an additional 400 workers were asked to deploy. All American Red Cross workers have been trained to help families rebuild their lives following disasters.

Section Committee Named to Pick Replacement Site of Oregon State Hospital

The Governor says this is a critical step as the state works together to implement plans to redesign Oregon’s mental health system.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski, Senate President Peter Courtney (D-Salem/Gervais/Woodburn) and House Speaker Karen Minnis (R-Wood Village) have announced creation of the Oregon State Hospital Site Selection Criteria Committee. Committee members include representatives from the Department of Human Services, Department of Administrative Services and both houses of the Oregon Legislature.

The committee`s charge is to finalize the site selection criteria by Sept. 1 for the Department of Administrative Services Facilities Division. DAS will use that criteria to create a list of suitable sites for review by the Governor and Legislature. Final site selections are scheduled to take place before the end of the 2007 Legislative Session.

One Person Dies in Head-On Crash Near McMinnville

(MCMINNVILLE) - One person died and another received non-life threatening injuries in a two-vehicle head-on crash Friday evening on Highway 18 near the west McMinnville bypass.

This is the second fatal crash investigated by Oregon State Police Friday and the first that falls within the official Fourth of July holiday reporting period. The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

OSP troopers say that at approximately 7:10 PM, a 1991 Mazda Miata driven by an adult male was eastbound on Highway 18 near milepost 44.5 when, for an unknown reason, it crossed into the westbound lane.

Concerned Driver Calls in DUII, Police Say it Makes a Difference on Holiday Weekend

Oregon State Police praised a cell caller's involvement as an example of how citizens can help keep our highways safe this holiday weekend.

(ROSEBURG) - A citizen's call on a cell phone to report a dangerous driver led to a DUII arrest east of Roseburg Friday, it was the fourth this weekend, which technically hadn't started yet.

Friday at about 10:50 AM, a citizen called the local OSP office on a cellphone to say they were behind a vehicle that was driving in an erratic manner.

Based on the information provided by the citizen, Trooper Teresa Bloom of the OSP Roseburg Area Command spotted the vehicle about 15 minutes later on Highway 138E near milepost 4 and stopped it. The contact led to the driver's arrest for DUII.

OSU Federal to Open Keizer Branch

(KEIZER) - OSU Federal is holding a grand opening celebration of it`s first Keizer Branch.

The grand opening will be on Thursday, July 6th, with refreshments and prizes. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 4:30 PM.

The branch is located inside the Safeway store on the corner of River Road and Chemawa Road in Keizer. Hours are M-F 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturdays 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
