Report: Oregon Students to Pay at Least $2141 More For College

Tuition at the average 4-year public university has increased by 40 percent since 2001, and nearly two-thirds of all 4-year college graduates now have student loans.

(SALEM) - Oregon students will have to pay $2141 to $2575 more in college loans beginning July 1st, according to a new report released by the research arm of the Campaign for America’s Future.

College students and graduates will be pushed deeper into debt as interest rates on Stafford loans -- the basic student loan -- rise from 5.3 percent to 7.14 percent on old loans and to 6.8 percent on new loans at the end of this week.

Parents that take out PLUS loans to help their children pay for an undergraduate education also face rising interest rates.

(SALEM) - Salem-area residents were out and about Sunday trying to find some relief from the hot weather.

Some sat in shaded areas of Bush’s Pasture Park, while some played in the cool waters of the Willamette River at Wallace Marine Park.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol was out in force making sure the river stayed safe.

Others chose to find a nice air conditioned place like the Riverfront Carousel, malls, and ice cream parlors. The movie theaters were also popular destinations Sunday.

Six Month Swanson Park Heroin Investigation Leads to 8 Arrests. 2 Sought

Since February, the Linn Drug Task Force has been investigating heroin distribution in the Swanson Park area of Albany

(ALBANY) - Albany Police Department spokesman Capt. Eric Cater says between April 28th, and June 2nd, the Linn Drug Task Force executed 3 narcotics search warrants at residences in the Swanson Park area and interdicted 1 heroin sale within the park.

The investigations led to a 4th narcotics search warrant being executed at a residence in a West Albany neighborhood on June 23rd, Carter said.

Battling Meth in Oregon a Top Priority

Battling the meth epidemic has been one of the top priorities for Oregon Congresswoman Darlene Hooley.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Already this year, Oregon Congresswoman Darlene Hooley has passed three anti-meth amendments; one to devote more money to the fight against drug trafficking, one for counter-methamphetamine efforts in Mexico and one to force the Drug Czar and the White House to finally give meth the attention and focus it requires.

This past week, added to these efforts were two amendments to provide more resources for anti-drug and gang task forces and to help kids threatened by drug use. Hooley says, “I’ve never seen a problem as pervasive or as damaging as Oregon’s meth epidemic. The production, distribution, and use of meth are serious threats to public health and safety."

U.S. Air Force Gulf War Veteran Raped

(CANBY) - Canby police are investigating what they are calling a forcible rape and sex abuse incident.

Police say the alleged rape occurred in the southeast part of Canby between 9:00 PM Friday and 4:00 AM Saturday.

The female victim reported that five males entered her apartment through an open front door and two of them forcibly raped her. No suspects have been arrested in the case as of Sunday morning.

Investigators say they are currently looking into the possibility that this may be a gang-related incident. The 42-year-old woman is a Gulf War veteran who served in the Air Force.

Holiday Weekend Off to Bad Start on Oregon Roadways

(SALEM) - Four people have died on Oregon roadways since Friday.

Oregon State Police say fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian crash happened on Interstate 5 northbound at the Phoenix interchange near milepost 24. Traffic early Saturday morning was diverted off and back onto freeway at the interchange.

A 59-year old man operating a BMW motorcycle east bound on Silverton Road Saturday crashed at approximately 6:47 PM in the 5700 Block of Silverton Road NE.

Homeowner Shoots, Kills Teenage Boy Believed to be Breaking Into Their Home

(ALBANY) - A teenage boy was shot and killed Saturday morning in Albany by residents who believed he had been breaking into their house.

Albany police say 16-year-old Jeremiah Daniel O`Sullivan died of a gunshot wound to the chest at Samaritan Albany General Hospital.

Capt. Eric Carter of the Albany Police Department says at about 2:30 AM police received a call from a resident at 2726 27th Ave. S.E. who said her home had been broken into and her purse, car keys and 2001 Buick Century had been stolen.
