Iraqi Police Storm Farm, Free 17 Hostages

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Iraqi police stormed a farm north of Baghdad early Thursday and freed at least 17 people who were snatched a day earlier in a mass kidnapping of about 85 workers and family members at the end of a factory shift.

The U.S. military, meanwhile, reported that four Marines and a soldier were killed in operations south and west of Baghdad, and an explosion of sectarian and revenge killings in Mosul — Iraq's third-largest city — over the past three days claimed 19 lives.

The chief lawyer representing Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants said they went on a hunger strike to protest the shooting death Wednesday of a defense attorney. It was the third such killing in the 8-month-old trial.

Drug Raid Leads to Discovery of Meth Lab Discovered in Albany Apartment

(ALBANY) - The Linn County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at 3410 SW Pacific Blvd #13 in Albany Wednesday.

As a result of the raid components of a methamphetamine lab were found in the apartment.

Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller said officers seized digital scales, methamphetamine, equipment for manufacturing methamphetamine, suspected pseudoephedrine and other chemicals that are used in the methamphetamine manufacture process.

In 2004, 149 Oregon workers under age 18 were seriously injured, with a 16-year-old fatally injured, in work-related incidents eligible for workers' compensation benefits. Falls and being struck by equipment are the two most common injury causes for younger workers.

Weyerhaeuser to Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 40 Percent

(FEDERAL WAY, Wash.) - In what amounts to a win-win for shareholders and the environment, Weyerhaeuser Wednesday pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2020 while reducing its reliance on high-priced fossil fuels.

A 40 percent reduction in annual greenhouse gases is the equivalent of taking 700,000 vehicles off the road for one year.

`We will do this by harnessing the benefits of a renewable, natural resource — biomass — as fuel in the boilers that generate steam and electrical energy in our mills,` said senior vice president Ernesta Ballard.

Marines Announce Murder, Other Charges

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Seven Marines and a sailor have been charged with murder in the April death of an Iraqi civilian, the Marine Corps said Wednesday.

All eight also were charged with kidnapping, according to a Marine statement issued at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Other charges include conspiracy, larceny and providing false official statements.

Separately, the U.S. military in Iraq announced that murder charges were filed against a fourth Army soldier in the shooting deaths May 9th of three civilians who had been detained by U.S. troops.

Governor Directs DHS to Ensure That No One Suffers From New Medicaid Rules

DHS officials estimate as many as 70,000 Oregonians may be unable to immediately and readily provide proof of citizenship.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski said Wednesday the state will make certain that no one who is eligible for Medicaid in Oregon will suffer harm from new federal Medicaid requirements, which will require nearly 500,000 Medicaid recipients in Oregon to show proof of citizenship when they enroll in the Oregon Health Plan.
