Salem Man Dies as a Result of an Accidental Gun Shot (AUDIO)

Vladimir Gorkavchenko and his family had been camping in the area and were driving down Breitenbusch Road on their way back to Salem when the crash, and shooting occurred.

(DETRIOT) - A Salem man died early Tuesday morning after surviving a major rollover crash with his family on Breitenbusch Rd SE. According to reports, 38-year-old Vladimir Gorkavchenko attempted to climb back up to the road using a loaded rifle as a brace when the fatal shot was accidentally fired.

Coast Guard Seeking New Members For Citizen`s Action Network

The only requirements for participating are having access to a phone and a view of the water.

(NEWPORT) - The Coast Guard is looking for dependable and proactive volunteers to assist in keeping the waters of the Pacific Northwest safe and clean.

Citizen's Action Network, a program that assists the Coast Guard in protecting waterways and communities in the Northwest, is looking for additional volunteers along the Oregon and Washington Coasts and the Columbia River.

The Coast Guard calls on Citizen's Action Network members to assist with a variety of missions to include search and rescue, pollution incidents and aids to navigation.

Citizen's Action Network is successful in not only lending aid to the Coast Guard, but it also saves taxpayers thousands of dollars.

It costs approximately $1,200 per hour to operate a Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat.

Center Street NE Closure at Mill Creek Begins June 13th

(SALEM) - A portion of Center Street NE will be closed to through traffic between 17th Street NE and 14th Street NE from June 13th, 2006, until early October 2006, to allow for replacement of the bridge crossing Mill Creek.

The existing narrow bridge built in 1914 is being replaced with a new, wider bridge that will accommodate automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. The new bridge will have two vehicle travel lanes and one left-turn lane, plus new shoulders, curbs, and sidewalks on each side.

Additionally, approximately 500 feet of Center Street NE east of the bridge will be realigned to match the new bridge, along with replacement and relocation of existing utilities.

A temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed to allow pedestrian traffic during the project. A detour will route eastbound and westbound traffic to 12th Street NE, State Street, and 17th Street NE.

Estacada Army Soldier Killed in Iraq (AUDIO)

This is not the first soldier named Jeremy Loveless to die since the beginning of hostilities. Army Guard Spc. Jeremy Loveless died at Fort Benning in 2003 after being called up for Iraqi Freedom duty.

(ESTACADA) - A U.S. Army field medic from Estacada, Jeremy Loveless, has been killed in Iraq near Mosul, a family member said Tuesday.

Loveless, 25, had held different jobs in the Estacada area and was training to become a paramedic in civilian life, said his mother-in-law, Bev Vetey.

Post Holiday Average Gasoline Prices Moving Downward

(SALEM) - While the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline remained flat during the Memorial Day weekend, prices in Oregon and its four measured metropolitan areas hit record highs. Salem`s average price for a gallon of gas is $3.07. Portland`s $3.09 trails the capitol city price and Eugene/Springfield residents are paying an average of $3.15.

The current national average stands at $2.85, more than a penny a gallon less than a week ago.

Oregon's statewide average price is up nine-tenths of a cent since last week to $3.11 per gallon. The Oregon and metropolitan area average prices climbed to new highs during the weekend, but by the end of Monday, they backed off by as much as a cent and a half per gallon in the Medford/Ashland region; Portland's average held steady at $3.10.

"Now that we made it through the first big driving holiday of the summer, we should get a better idea of what to expect in coming months, depending, of course, on how the many factors affecting oil prices behave," said AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Elliott Eki.

2 of 3 College Grads go Into Debt

If rates keep rising, students with the old variable rate loans could end up paying as much as 8.25 percent.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Nearly two of every three undergraduate students are going into debt to go to college, owing an average of more than $19,000, most often to the government.

Among a dozen states sampled, New York students averaged the largest loans, while those in Oregon and Minnesota were most likely to have borrowed.

About 65 percent of students who graduated in the 2003-2004 school year did so after getting student loans, according to the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics.

For students who took out loans, the average debt was $19,202. Of that sum, $17,022 came through federal loan programs.

The agency focused on 12 large, medium, and mid-sized states, but did not compile enough data from the other 38 states to create reliable statewide averages.

At Least 37 Dead in 2 Iraq Car Bombings

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - A parked car bomb hit a popular market in a Shiite area north of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 25 people and wounding 65, the Interior Ministry said. Another car bomb went off at a dealership in southern Iraq, killing at least 12 people and wounding 32.

Meanwhile, a key terror suspect who allegedly confessed to hundreds of beheadings has been captured, Iraqi officials said.

The market blast occurred about 7:30 p.m. in the market in Husseiyniyah, some 20 miles north of the capital, Interior Ministry spokesman Lt. Colonel Falah Al-Mohamedawi said. Five people were killed and 28 wounded, some seriously, he said.

Keizer Police Safety Course Offers Women Personal Protection

(SALEM) - Keizer Police are providing personal safety courses to women and others who want to gain an edge in confidence.

The department`s Lance Inman says the courses are free of charge and designed to increase the level of personal safety awareness to groups of individuals. The courses consist of instructional presentations, training exercises and dynamic simulations.

The Personal Protection Strategies for Women safety course will be presented on Thursday, June 15th at 6:00 PM at the Keizer Police Department auditorium located at 930 Chemawa Rd NE in Keizer.

The strategies educate participants about myths and facts regarding sexual assaults, personal protection strategies, how to resist an assault, personal defense devices and what to do if assaulted or confronted.
