Oregonians Warned About Group Illegally Selling Insurance (AUDIO)

An Oregon member who was involved in an auto accident in 2004 found that he had to pay for damages when Global Healings failed to pay his claim.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Insurance Division is advising consumers NOT to do business with a Washington organization that is illegally selling insurance in Oregon.

The Global Healings Society of Puyallup, Washington, which describes itself as a private ministry, uses the Internet to sell memberships in five cooperatives that purport to provide an alternative to traditional insurance coverage.

The Insurance Division in May 2005 ordered the group to stop selling memberships to Oregon residents without being licensed in Oregon as an insurance company.

However, the division recently learned that several Oregon residents had purchased memberships as an alternative to auto insurance, which is required by state law.

2 CBS Crew Members Killed in Iraq Bombing

(NEW YORK) - A car bomb exploded near a CBS News crew covering American troops in Iraq on Memorial Day, killing a cameraman and a soundman and seriously injuring the correspondent, the network said.

Veteran cameraman Paul Douglas, 48, and soundman James Brolan, 42, were killed, said Kelli Edwards, a CBS News spokeswoman. Correspondent Kimberly Dozier, 39, was in critical condition at a U.S. military hospital in Baghdad after undergoing surgery.

CBS News did not release any additional information about her injuries but said doctors were cautiously optimistic about her prognosis.

Man Wounded in Salem Shooting, Man Sought by Police (AUDIO)

(SALEM) - Salem police are asking for the public`s help in locating a man who allegedly shot another man early Monday morning.

Salem police spokesman Lt. Dave Okada says just after midnight they responded a report of a man with a gunshot wound in the 1700 block of Evergreen Ave. NE.

24-year-old Brandon Brown of Salem, was transported to Salem Hospital by medics with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the left shoulder.

Police are looking 47-year-old David Aaron Mantooth, of Salem in connection with the shooting.

Constitution Party Expects Candidate to be Challenge For Saxton

(SALEM – AP) - Members of the Oregon Constitution Party say they have recruited a gubernatorial candidate who could spell trouble for Republican nominee Ron Saxton.

Party officials WON'T reveal the name of their candidate until midweek, a few days before their nominating convention in Lake Oswego.

But Constitution Party state chairman Bob Ekstrom says the candidate will make opposition to abortion a central campaign theme.

Saxton has said he supports abortion rights, but would also back some limits on the procedure, like parental notification.

Tribe Says it May Run More Anti-Kulongoski Ads

(SALEM) - In the just-ended primary election season, the tribe that runs Oregon's largest casino spent $850,000 to blanket the airwaves with TV ads blasting Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Republican Kevin Mannix.

Despite the ad blitz, Kulongoski won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in his contest with two challengers. But Mannix went down to defeat in the May 16 GOP primary, a loss he blames in large part on TV ads the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde ran against him.

Now the Grand Ronde is prepared to bankroll a new round of TV ads targeting Kulongoski in the general election, if he persists in backing a competing casino that the tribe says will trash the Columbia Gorge and create unfair competition among Oregon's tribal casinos.

Applicants Sought For Reserve Officers and Cadet Explorers

(INDEPENDENCE) - The Independence Police Department is seeking reserve officers and cadet explorers.

To qualify for the reserve police officer position, applicants must be at least 21-years-old by April 1st, have a high school diploma, be of good moral character, and have a clear criminal record.

Applicant testing includes a writing and physical agility exam.

High scoring applicants will be invited back for an oral interview, then meet with the Chief who makes the final appointments.

Applicants who pass the oral interview will be given a thorough background investigation. Once hired all reserve officers will be sent to a reserve police academy.

Brawl Between Several Adults Leads to Stabbings

(MOLALLA) - A brawl between seven adults left two men with serious stab wounds in the Molalla area Friday. Police say a third man received other non life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Details are sketchy, but police say the situation apparently involves six adult men and one adult woman, described as all being in their late 30`s, who consumed alcohol while on a fishing trip.

Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies responded to the stabbing incident at 36234 S. Dickey Prairie Road in Molalla Friday shortly after 8:00 PM.

Detective Jim Strovink with the Clackamas County Sheriff`s Office says investigators are having a difficult time figuring out what actually happened, `No apparent motive has been determined and no arrests have been made as deputies continue to sort out all the conflicting stories provided by all the subjects involved.`

He says at least one Sheriff's supervisor on the scene is under the impression the injuries the patients received during this stabbing event occurred after a fishing trip earlier in the day and alcohol was involved.
