Marine Board: Boaters Need to Beware of Dangers Lurking in Oregon Waterways

(SALEM) - Recent warmer and sunny weather has boaters flocking to state waterways to enjoy a day in the sun.

The Oregon State Marine Board wants to make sure you and your family stay Safe & Sound while out on the water this spring.

Ashley Massey with the Marine Board says average state water temperatures are in the mid-50`s due to heavy snow pack run off, which means if you remain in the water, hypothermia can occur in as little as 15 minutes.

OSP Salem Area Command Receives DUII Agency of The Year Award

The office led the other OSP Area Commands with nearly 450 impaired driving arrests during 2005.

(TIGARD) - The Oregon State Police Salem Area Command was selected to receive the "DUII Agency of the Year Award for the Oregon State Police" during the 10TH Annual DUII Multi-Disciplinary Impaired Driving Training Conference, held April 28th and 29th in Tigard.

The Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force presented their annual awards of excellence to various organizations, groups, and individuals who made a significant contribution to deterring impaired driving in Oregon during 2005.

Underage Driver From Fatal Crash Transferred to Adult Jail

(SALEM) - The driver involved in Saturday night's single vehicle rollover fatal crash on Interstate 5 south of Salem, 17-year old Carlos Miguel Cabrera has been transferred to the Marion County Jail.

Oregon State Police say they are continuing their investigation into Saturday night's single vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 5 south of Salem that has now resulted in the death of a passenger.

The driver, who is the victim's son, has been transferred from the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center to Marion County Jail.

Salem Police Launch New Crime Prevention Councils For North Salem Neighborhoods

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit has launched a new meeting format for neighbors of the Northgate, Highland and Grant neighborhood areas.

A North-North Central Crime Prevention Council meeting will be held Wednesday, May 17th, at the Salem Senior Center at 6:30 PM for residents of those neighborhoods.

The crime prevention councils will provide an avenue for residents to come together and interact with police regarding issues of crime and public safety.

(SALEM) - The members of the Methodist Mission to Oregon led by Jason Lee set a firm foundation for Western migration and United States claims on the area that became Oregon.

An exhibit at the Mission Mill Museum, explores the contributions made by the Methodist missionaries who stayed and includes items on loan from Marion County Historical Society, Willamette University, the Oregon-Idaho Methodist Archives and Linn County Historical Museum and others.

Dumpster Fires in the Downtown Area

(ALBANY) - Albany`s Fire Department has responded to a series of dumpster fires in the downtown area that began around the first of the year. Fire spokesperson Wanda Omdahl says the latest fire happened April 30th at Emma Downtown, 422 SW 1st St. The occupant, who lives above this establishment, was awakened by the smell of smoke and noticed that the dumpster in the alleyway was smoldering.

If this dumpster had ignited, the building could have been damaged with a significant loss to its owner and occupants. Needless to say, the fire could have potentially led to grave injury and death.

Family Coming to Terms With Apparent Death of BYU Coed

(CORVALLIS AP) - Cammy Wilberger says she has made peace with the realization that her daughter Brooke is dead, and that the death was "dark, painful, lonely and ugly."

"We've come to terms with Brooke's death," she said Tuesday at Oregon State University. "We rejoice in the great memories and the fun girl that she was. We know that we will be together eternally as a family."

The open and passionate talk of the hectic days after Brooke Wilberger's disappearance nearly two years ago centered on her family's reliance on faith to get them through and the community participation that renewed their faith in humanity.

Babysitter and Two Young Children Escape Kitchen Fire

(SALEM) - A quick thinking babysitter evacuated two small children from their home Wednesday after a kitchen fire broke out just after 3:00 PM. Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says Rachel Dunlevy was babysitting two young children at 3305 Portland NE when she turned on the stove, and noticed that it started to spark.

She told firefighters that she turned off the burner and switched to another, then moments later she discovered flames coming from the back of the stove. That`s when she gathered the two boys, 2 and 6 years of age, and evacuated the building.

Albany River Rhythms Concerts Lineup for 2006

(ALBANY) - The Albany Parks & Recreation Department announces the lineup for the 23rd annual River Rhythms summer concert series.

Bands include the new generation Latin band Grupo Fantasma, concert rock violinist Aaron Meyer, Western Underground, backup band for the late Chris LeDoux and many more.

FBI and Police Seek Location of Bank Robbery Suspect

(CORVALLIS) - The FBI and several local police agencies are asking for your help in identifying and locating a man who is wanted in connection with two bank robberies in Corvallis: one at the Washington Mutual Bank, 777 NW Kings Blvd. that happened on 11/03/05, and a second robbery that took place 4/10/06 at the Umpqua Bank, 415 NW 3rd Street.

Investigators say the man used a demand note to commit the robberies. After obtaining cash from the tellers, he is said to have escaped on foot. The suspect is believed to be responsible for seven additional bank robberies throughout Oregon, including incidents in Salem, Eugene and The Dalles.
