Poultry Safe to Eat When Handled and Cooked Properly

(SALEM) - Oregon's poultry producers have a message for consumers that is backed up by public health officials and the state veterinarian: It is safe to eat chicken and other poultry products as long as those products are properly handled and cooked. That message is no different now than it has been in the past despite continued concern over avian influenza.

Valley`s Largest Business Trade Show One Week Away

It happens at the Oregon State Fair & Expo Center - Jackman Long Building, 2330 17th Street NE in Salem.

(SALEM) - Organizers of the valley's largest business trade show, Show-Biz 2006, say the one-day show features over 200 exhibitors in a festive and decorated atmosphere in the Oregon State Fair and Expo Center's Jackman Long Building.

Now in it's eleventh year, the show continues to gain popularity, nearly 6,000 people attended the show in 2005.

Salem Firefighters Battle Commercial Fire

(SALEM) - A fire in a Salem food wharehouse compressor room led to big damage just after 3:00 PM on Thursday afternoon, at 3371 Portland Road NE. As the fire grew, it activiated the fire alarm system at the business, Ventura Foods.

The manager told firefighters that he discovered a fire growing very rapidly in their compressor room. He says he attempted to put the flames out with a portable fire extinguisher, but the fire was way too large at that point.

Neighbor Alerts Residents to Fire

(SALEM) - Homeowner Barbara Prythongyam was at home when a neighbor started knocking loudly on her front door. As she answered the front door and escaped outside, she heard the smoke alarms go off in the home.

Salem Fire Department spokesman Bill Holmstrom says firefighters responded to 1395 46th Place SE after a report of smoke coming from the garage.

"First arriving firefighters reported heavy smoke coming from the front portion of the garage of a single-story home." He says firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and contained it to the garage.

State Web site lets public report possible price-fixing; links to conservation strategies.

(PORTLAND) - Governor Ted Kulongoski and Attorney General Hardy Myers launched a Web site Thursday that provides information on how gas prices are set and regulated, links to conservation strategies, information about tax credits for projects that reduce energy use in transportation, and invites Oregonians to help detect unlawful conspiracies in gasoline pricing.

The Governor and Attorney General also urged the next session of the Legislature to pass an anti-price gouging law as part of Oregon`s overall effort to achieve energy independence and cope with skyrocketing prices at the pump.

Hundreds of Sprinkler Heads Stolen From Farms in North Marion County

(SALEM) - More than $5,000 in sprinkler heads have disappeared from farms in the north part of Marion County.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Rau says that over the last month, deputies have been receiving reports of the theft of sprinkler heads from irrigation pipes on several farms in the north part of Marion County, generally in the Monitor-Mckee Rd NE and St Louis Rd NE areas.

The thefts have ranged from about 60 sprinkler heads to as many as 500 at a time. Investigators estimate the value of the stolen sprinklers at more than $5000, according to Rau...

Oregon Earns Dubious Credit for Gas Prices

(SALEM) - High gas prices have grouped Oregon with several other states and the District of Columbia, as places where the cost for a gallon of regular gas has topped the three dollar mark.

Elliot Eki with Oregon AAA says it is a distinction we could have lived without, "Oregon joins top 10, not the list we want though. The statewide avg. price for regular rose to $3.001, placing Oregon in the group of 10, actually 9 states plus the District of Columbia, where the statewide average exceeds $3."

Salem City Council Approves Garbage Rate Increases

(SALEM) - Residential, commercial, and commercial medical waste rates for city of Salem residents in Marion and Polk counties is going up this month.

The Salem City Council approved the rate increase, which the Mid-Valley Garbage and Recycling Association says it needed to defray increasing costs for fuel, insurance, and yard debris disposal.

Military Uniforms on Display at State Capitol in May

(SALEM) - The Greater Salem Area Veterans Organizations (GSAVO) is once again hosting an educational military display in the Galleria area at the Oregon State Capitol. The display is an historic collection of military uniforms, artifacts, and memorabilia and is open to the public weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the display will be up through June 1st.

The extensive collection has received recognition and numerous compliments for its educational value. "Mac" MacDonald, from GSAVO and one of the collection's curators, said the display includes complete uniforms from all branches of military service and from different eras.
