Atkinson, Starr to Pressure Special Session on Jessica`s Law

Atkinson and Starr served as Co-sponsors of a 2005 Senate Bill seeking enactment of Jessica's Law in Oregon.

(SALEM) - Oregon State Senator and candidate for Governor Jason Atkinson will team up with Senator Bruce Starr during this week's special session to solve a problem ignored by Senate leaders last session.

Not willing to trust that leadership will follow through on recent promises to bring up Jessica's Law during the Special Session, Atkinson's gubernatorial campaign recently mailed petitions to 64,000 households across the state. In his race for Governor, Senator Atkinson has spoken passionately about the importance of protecting and preserving the Oregon family.

Jessica's Law, which has already been approved in 48 other states, would set lengthy, mandatory minimum sentences for child sex abusers as well as provide for better tracking of these predators...

Buena Vista Ferry Reopens For 2006 Season

(Buena Vista) - The ferry at Buena Vista Begins operation at 7:00 AM Wednesday morning, commencing servide across the Willamette River for the 2006 season.

A Marion County Public Works spokesman says the seasonal opening of the Buena Vista Ferry on Wednesday, April 19th will run from April 19th through October 29th, 2006.

The operating schedule is:

Passing Fire Engine Crew Discovers Fire in Shed

(SALEM) - Salem firefighters responding to a fire in a storage shed at 3275 Lanacaster Dr. NE, noticed a separate fire burning while enroute to the first fire at 10:44 AM Tuesday.

Fire Engine #3 crews say they noticed smoke coming from a field in the area. Since they were a backup engine for the first fire, they were able to investigate.

Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says that upon further investigation, they determined that a storage shed was on fire. "Engine #3 crews made an aggressive attack and quickly knocked down the fire. Other responding apparatus arrived and helped complete the extinguishment."

Amber Alert Lifted

Police were looking for a yellow VW Beetle with temporary tags, but after hundreds of calls and no report of a missing girl, the alert was called off.

(VANCOUVER, WA) - An Amber Alert has been issued in the state of Washington and surrounding areas for a 10-year old girl who was abducted about 2:45 PM this afternoon in Vancouver, WA. A male suspect grabbed the little girl off of a magenta colored bicycle and forced her into a newer yellow Volkswagen beetle. He was seen by a witness as he got the little girl`s attention, spoke to her from his car, and then pulled her inside as he sped away through a red light.

The 10-year old Caucasian girl has long blonde hair, in a ponytail, is about 70 pounds and 4`5` tall. She is wearing blue spandex pants and a tie-dyed t-shirt. The little girl`s name is not known at this time.

Lost Treasures returned After Four Decades

(Mt. Hood) - A priceless collection of documents, long considered lost, have been returned to the Mazamas. Missing since the 1970's, this trove includes the Mt. Hood summit register for the years 1891-1895, a Mt. St. Helens summit register from 1898-1908, and a volume of Mazamas Council minutes covering meetings from March, 1894 through December 1898.

Forgotten for decades in the laundry room of a Portland residence, the documents are back in the Mazama archives in remarkably good condition.

The Mt. Hood summit register contains the names of many well-known 19th century Oregonians, including J.K. Gill, founder of the J.K. Gill Company, Raymond G. Jubitz, founder of Jubitz Trucking Company, and Prince Lucien Campbell, later president of the University of Oregon. It was also signed by the party that founded the Mazamas on the summit on July 19, 1894.

Attempted Murder and Burglary in South Salem

2-3 other victims in the house at the time of the shooting remain unidentified.

(SALEM) - A brother and sister from South Salem are under arrest for Attempted Murder, first-degree Burglary and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Salem Police Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says that about 8:23 PM Monday night, officers responded to a report of shots fired in a residence at 2336 Waln Creek Dr. South.

"Initial reports were that an off duty Turner police officer was holding two of the suspects at gun point. Arriving Salem police officers took Jeremy and Shannelle Harris into custody."

"The victim, Darren Fall, told us that 3 or four people forced their way into his house and began shooting at him. He said he returned fire and the suspects fled."

State Police Fish and Wildlife Troopers Stop Suicide Attempt in Wooded Area East of Silverton

(SILVERTON) - Two Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division troopers found and prevented a Marion County resident reportedly attempting suicide Saturday afternoon east of Silverton.

The man reportedly is in critical condition but itis reported that he will survive. One of the troopers, Adam Turnbo, helped save three individuals two weekends ago after their canoe overturned in the Willamette River.

Saturday at approximately 2:30 PM, OSP Trooper Adam Turnbo and Trooper Dennis Conrad, a retired trooper working under contract with the Department of Forestry, were contacted by two subjects at the Abiqua Mainline gate off Highway 213 east of Silverton.

They said that they had received a call from a friend who said he was going to commit suicide in the area.

Circle K Robbery Suspects Captured

(CORVALLIS) - Two suspects suspected of robbing a Circle K store in Corvallis were caught by Benton County Sheriff's deputies shortly after 3:30 AM Sunday.

A Circle K employee in Corvallis told police that one of the three suspects who entered the store at NW 9th St. and NW Grant Ave, put his hand underneath his jacket and told the employee to give him all of the money or he would be shot.

Corvallis Police Officers were dispatched to the Circle K robbery at 3:29 AM Sunday, after the suspects entered the store and confronted the employee.

One of the suspects was later identified as Shawn Oard of Albany. Police say the second suspect, identified as Ismael Nelson, stood beside Oard at the counter...
