Construction Begins on New Women`s Dorm at Corban College

Davidson Hall, completed in 2004, has quickly reached its 108-person capacity, so a second new dorm is being built next door.

(SALEM) - An influx of students living on-campus at Corban College has already filled a 1 ½-year-old residence hall and precipitated the building of a second structure on the campus of Corban College.

The unnamed new residence hall, designed to house 110 students, will open to students in the fall.

"This fall, we had 448 residents, compared with only 378 residents the year before," said Vice President for Business Chris Erickson. "That meant we were beyond comfortable capacity, and that`s the reason we decided to build a new residence hall."

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - A third retired U.S. general has called for the removal of Secretary of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, asking him to step down over mistakes made in invading Iraq.

Lt. Gen. Gregory Newbold, a 3-star Marine Corps general, wrote an essay in this week's Time magazine, stating that the administration`s decision to invade Iraq, "was done with a casualness and swagger that are the special province of those who have never had to execute these missions -- or bury the results."

Newbold left the Marine Corps in late 2002, after serving as director of operations of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2000 through Sept. 11th, 2001.

Foxworth Placed on Administrative Leave

(PORTLAND AP) - Police Chief Derrick Foxworth was placed on paid administrative leave by Mayor Tom Potter Tuesday because of allegations of sexual impropriety with a police desk clerk.

Potter has been under pressure to take action since e-mails detailing the affair were made public.

"This is the most difficult thing I've done to this point," Potter said at a news conference.

Potter said he was placing Foxworth on leave because "the intense interest in this investigation is distracting the bureau from its primary mission, and may erode the confidence and trust I believe that are essential to that mission."

1,000 Salem-Keizer Students Protest Immigration Reform

(SALEM) - Over 1,000 Salem-Keizer high and middle school students walked out of their classes on Monday.

The students marched to the steps of the Oregon State Capitol to join together in a rally protesting a bill by the U.S. House cracking down on illegal immigration.

Salem-Keizer District spokesman Jay Remy says the students who left campus will face either detention or suspension in accordance with district's policy on unexcused absences or truancy.

Chemawa School Prepares for Spring Pow-Wow

An opportunity to support the Native American Youth groups at Chemawa Indian School happens May 5th and 6th.

(SALEM) - One of the most historic institutions in the Salem/Keizer area, the Chemawa Indian School, is preparing for its 122nd Spring Pow-Wow. Organizers like Crystal Boyd of the Chemawa School, say it is a fun time for all, `We are very excited. We expect around a thousand people, there are 440 students at the school alone.`

CityWatch Launches How Local Government Works Workshop

(SALEM) - "Democratic government thrives on citizen participation, " says CityWatch President Mary Kamppi. "While campaigning for pro-community ideas and candidates, our members report there's an awful lot of apathy out there."

Hosted by the South East Salem Neighborhood Association (SESNA) the workshop is designed to give participants insight into how local government works. More importantly, it will help participants connect community issues to the right department in local government. Community resources in support of civic engagement will also be provided.

New Reports Show Saxton, Kulongoski Far Ahead in Money Race

(SALEM AP) - With just five weeks left until the May primary elections, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Ron Saxton and incumbent Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski have raised much more money than their opponents, new campaign finance reports show.

As of March 30, Portland attorney Saxton had a cash balance of $1,018,878 to spend on the television ads and voter outreach he'll need to overtake his chief rival, former Salem Rep. Kevin Mannix, who beat Saxton in the 2002 primary despite being outspent.

A third Republican candidate in the race, State Sen. Jason Atkinson, R-Central Point, reported having $114,112 to spend as of the end of last month, a solid total for a candidate who is generally considered a longshot by political pundits because of a low statewide profile.

Clackamas Murder Suspect Identified

(OREGON CITY) - The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect believed responsible for the double murder of Timmie and Craig Stumpf. This in custody suspect is identified as 25-year old Joseph Ray Oneil, the biological son of the deceased female Timmie L. Stumpf.

Clackamas County Sheriff's investigators discovered the bodies of Timmie L. Stumpf and her spouse, Craig Stephen Stumpf Friday inside their residence located on SW Boones Bend Road, in Wilsonville.

The son, Joseph Ray Oneil was rapidly declared as a person of interest concerning this murder investigation, and law enforcement groups were immediately notified of the crime's possible connection to Joseph Oneil.

Governor Speaks to Student Organization; Calls for More Post-Secondary Ed Funding

(CORVALLIS) - Governor Ted Kulongoski today met with students from Oregon State University`s Associated Student organization and discussed the need for continued investment in post-secondary education. He also discussed a letter he sent to the student group last week, in which he said that he supported several of their initiatives, including child care for students, help with financial aid and college applications and their opposition to a high aid-high tuition model of financing education.

`It is essential that we continue to invest in Oregon`s college students. Without the GI bill, I would not have been able to accomplish what I have done – we need to give the next generation the same opportunity,` said Governor Kulongoski.
