Woodburn to Crack-Down on Illegal Signs

(WOODBURN) - Having a garage sale and live in Woodburn? Well, don`t place your garage sale sign or any signs for the matter on city right of ways. If you do, you could get a visit from a code enforcement officer.

The City of Woodburn will soon begin removing all signs from city right-of-ways – all of which are illegal.

The city`s sign ordinance prohibits the placing of signs of any kind within city limit right- of-ways.

Right-of-ways include: light poles, sidewalks, curbs, traffic signs and structures.

Wirth Pleads Guilty in Meth Case

(SALEM - AP) - Former State Rep. Kelley Wirth pleaded guilty Thursday to possession of methamphetamine in a scandal that began when Wirth was run over and seriously injured by a woman who accused Wirth of having an affair with her boyfriend.

In a brief proceeding in Marion County Circuit Court, the Corvallis Democrat was sentenced to 18 months of probation and 80 hours of community service.

As part of the sentencing, Judge Joseph Guimond ordered Wirth to have no contact with Fernando Mendez, who told police that he had had a sexual relationship with Wirth, which she denies.

Citizen Budget Committee Has Ward 3 Opening

Ward 3 is located in the mid-portion of South Salem, generally east of Liberty St

(SALEM) - The Ward 3 representative position on the City of Salem Citizen Budget Committee is currently vacant, because the previous representative no longer resides in the ward.

The budget committee, which includes the city council and nine citizen members, reviews the city manager`s proposed annual budget.

Citizens interested in serving on the committee in the Ward 3 position may submit a resume setting forth their qualifications and background and a statement of the reasons he or she wishes to be considered for the vacancy.

Stampede Continue Winning Ways, Down Eugene 107-97

Up next for the club is a home game Friday against the Portland Chinooks

(EUGENE) - The Salem Stampede improved their record to 3-0 Friday night by beating the Eugene Chargers 107-97.

The Stampede were led by Ramon Taylor who had 28 points.

Guard Jeff Dunn had 25 points, and center Eric Fiegi chipped-in 24 points for the Stampede.

Eugene, also new to the IBL this year, was led by Michael Harper who poured-in 26 points.

(PORTLAND - AP) - KEX radio and KATU-TV, both of Portland, won "Overall Excellence" honors in the 2005 Oregon Associated Press Broadcasters Association awards. And KOPT radio and KEZI-TV, both in Eugene, won the "Overall Excellence" honors, outside the Portland metropolitan area. But that's not the big news for Salem. Kevin Hays was our big winner Saturday night when the awards were announced at the annual banquet in Portland.

A relatively new category for the AP awards is "Best Contributor." That award goes to the person who consistently helps the AP with stories and tips. And the winner for 2005 is Kevin Hays, of Salem-News.com. Hays is now also doing daily reports from Salem for KEX radio.

Investigators Take Wilsonville Double-Homicide Suspect Into Custody

(WILSONVILLE) - A request for police investigation from family members Friday afternoon, led to the discovery of two apparent murder victims.

Investigators with the Clackamas County Sheriff`s Office in Wilsonville responded to the request of family members to check the welfare of the occupants at 32485 SW Boones Bend Road, in Wilsonville around 1:00 PM Friday.

After entering the residence, an adult couple was discovered deceased and the apparent victims of homicidal violence...

Governor Kulongoski Declares April 9 - 15, 2006, Oregon Hunger Awareness Week

Governor calls on all Oregonians to join him in the fight against hunger

(SALEM) - Continuing his effort to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in Oregon, Governor Ted Kulongoski will kick-off Hunger Awareness Week on Monday at the Oregon Food Bank Hunger Heroes Luncheon, and deliver the first annual Jerry Tippens Award for an individual`s contribution in the fight against hunger. The Governor will also announce several key steps he will take in the coming years to continue the progress over the last three to end hunger and food insecurity in Oregon.

The Goal of Hunger Awareness Week is to: 1) Promote awareness about the hunger problem in Oregon; 2) Educate about the root causes of hunger; and 3) Help inspire citizens and communities throughout the state to take action to help end hunger in Oregon.

Governor`s Proclamation Honors Former Prisoners of War

(SALEM) - Governor Theodore Kulongoski has signed a proclamation designating Saturday, April 8th, 2006 as Former Prisoner of War (POW) Recognition Day in Oregon.

Since World War I, more than 142,000 Americans have been held captive by hostile powers. Many of these prisoners suffered extreme physical injury, mental and emotional trauma while they were interned.

The Director of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs, Jim Willis, said Americans must never forget the sacrifices made and terrible trauma these Americans endured as POWs.

Atkinson Wins Oregon Farm Bureau Endorsement

(CENTRAL POINT) - Oregon State Senator and candidate for Governor Jason Atkinson today welcomed the endorsement of his candidacy by the Oregon Farm Bureau Federation. The Farm Bureau is the state's largest general agriculture organization. Its 22 member Board of Directors met Tuesday in the culmination of a 3-month process and voted overwhelmingly to support Atkinson in the upcoming gubernatorial primary.

Five Arrested After Breaking Into Stephens Middle School

(SALEM) - Five people were arrested Wednesday morning after breaking into Adam Stephens Middle school in northeast Salem.

Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says just after 5:00 AM, police received a report of several high school aged people breaking the school's library window.

When authorities arrived they discovered that the library had been entered and numerous items had been taken.

Officers then located the suspects, three adults and two juveniles, and recovered several pieces of electronic equipment including computers and a video camera.
