Principals Seek to Temporarily Close Taft Middle School

The possibility of converting schools to a kindergarten-through-third-grade, and a fourth-through-sixth-grade configuration will be studied next year

(Lincoln City) - On Tuesday, principals from the north Lincoln County public schools will submit a recommendation to the Lincoln County School Board to close Taft Middle School for at least a year, and convert Taft High into a seventh-through-12th-grade school.

Taft Middle Principal Steve Kilduff said it will not be decided for at least another year if Taft Middle will be closed permanently. In the next year, the steering committee and school district will examine Oceanlake and Taft elementary schools for possible permanent closure.

The recommendation is for Oceanlake and Taft Elementary to still be kindergarten- through-sixth-grade schools for the 2006-07 school year.

Recent Cold Weather Has Salem Mission in Need of Donations

(Salem) - With the recent cold snap, and with cooler and wet weather expected to continue in the mid-valley over the next few weeks, the Union Gospel Mission is in need of donations to handle the number of homeless coming to seek help from the winter weather.

Tom Zobel with UGM of Salem says currently they are serving 500+ meals a day at the mission.

They are in desperate need of men`s clothing especially pants, shirts, underwear, coats, and socks.

Food donations are needed as well.

Small Business and Education Advocates Respond to New Analysis of Bush 2007 Budget

Tax cuts will make matters worse

(Silverton) - A new analysis of President Bush`s 2007 budget shows that Oregon would experience large and growing cuts in federal investments over the next five years, the Oregon Center for Public Policy warned today. If adopted by Congress, the President`s budget would weaken critical education and training efforts, and place significant new burdens on Oregon`s budget. The analysis released today by the Washington, DC-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows state-by-state effects of the budget cuts over five years.

The Administration`s budget calls for $183 billion in cuts to domestic discretionary (non-military, non-entitlement) programs over the next five years.

Investigation Leads to Drug Arrests, Seized Children, and Recovered Stolen Property

(Keizer) - Officers in Keizer seized several children late Thursday night after investigators determined that they were left in a position where they could access drugs including methamphetamine. Two Keizer residents and two people listed as transients were arrested on drug charges and Endangering the Welfare of a Minor, from two separate locations.

Police say items seized included a child`s baby bottle that had been converted to a smoking device for drugs.

Former Oregon Lawmaker Becomes Target of Ethics Investigation

Commission investigators might have to issue a subpoena to compel Wirth to answer questions about the case

(Salem AP) - The state's ethics commission launched a formal investigation Friday into whether former state Rep. Kelley Wirth violated state law by spending her last weeks in office giving pay raises to her mother.

Wirth so far has not cooperated with state investigators who are trying to determine whether the Corvallis Democrat used her public office for private gain by giving her mother unwarranted pay raises, officials said.

Patrick Hearn, executive director of the Oregon Government Standards and Practices Commission, said Wirth has not responded to attempts to reach her by telephone or mail in recent weeks.

Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge After Assault in Woodburn

(Woodburn) - Investigators say a 23-year old Woodburn man was assaulted by another man with an instrument Saturday around 5:00 PM, at 1725 E. Lincoln Street in Woodburn.

Sgt. Jeff Wheeler with the Marion County Sheriff`s Office says the victim was assaulted by 20-year old Kristopher Kenfield. The victim sustained serious injuries to his face, causing broken bones and needed surgery.
