Salem Video and Film Festival a Big Hit

Event is one of three festivals set for Salem this year

(Salem) - Organizers of The Mid-Valley Video and Film Festival say the event was a huge success, with excitement, exhilaration, and lots and lots of great local talent presented on the big screen at the Northern Lights Theatre on Commercial in South Salem.

Elderly Man Shoots Wife, Then Himself at Assisted Living Facility

(Sublimity) - Stayton Police say an elderly husband and wife were found dead Monday morning after an apparent murder-suicide at Marian Estates Assisted Living Facility where they resided.

Police say employees found the couple around 6:30 AM in the Elliott, the assisted living portion of Marian Estates.

Investigators say 81-year-old Howard Naue, and his wife, 83-year-old Florence Naue, both died of gunshot wounds.

Salem-Keizer, Oregon Public School Enrollment Climbs in 2005-06 School Year

The largest areas of growth came in the Portland suburbs, in Salem, and in Bend.

(Salem) - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced Monday that the total number of Oregon elementary and secondary students enrolled in public schools has increased sharply since last year.

According to Oct. 1st, 2005 counts reported by school districts, Oregon has 559,228 students in public schools – an increase of 6,889 since last year (1.2%). State population forecasts had predicted an increase of less than 1%.

Salem D.A.R.E. Program Gets Boost

Ambassador of the late D.A.R.E. supporter Dave Williams, is his grandson Cody… a Salem student and D.A.R.E. graduate

(Salem) - The Salem Police Department`s D.A.R.E. Program will get a boost Monday, March 6th at the Salem City Council meeting, with a $1,000 donation that is being made in memory of Mr. Dave Williams.

Mr. Williams was actively involved in supporting local law enforcement and the fire department in his community of Hemet, California. He was also responsible for helping out with an annual golf tournament to raise funds for the D.A.R.E. Program, and the grandfather of a Salem Richmond Elementary and D.A.R.E. graduate.

Mr. Williams passed away In October of 2004, leaving this great legacy for his family. His grandson, Cody Hubert, is proud to carry on this tradition.

Citizen Tip Leads to Arrest in Road Rage Assault

Media reports brought quick tips to police who took the alleged assailant into custody

(Corvallis) - A tip from a citizen led to an arrest in a serious `road rage` assault that happened Wednesday.

Lt. Ron Noble with Corvallis Police says the incident started on Highway 20 between Albany and Corvallis.

Charles Lane is accused of beating a man after heated contact between the two drivers on the roadway. A woman and a small child, according to Noble, accompanied Lane.

Investigators say that Lane began assaulting the other driver after he stopped at his job site in the 1600 block of NW Garryanna Street. The woman passenger is alleged to have exited the vehicle, a late-model black Explorer, so she could watch.

Governor Calls on President to Reverse Health Care Cuts for Oregonians

"I need a commitment from you that the federal government will be a reliable partner that helps states meet the needs of the citizens it serves," the Governor added.

(Washington, D.C.) - While attending the National Governor`s Association conference in Washington, D.C., Monday, Governor Ted Kulongoski delivered a letter to President Bush asking for a renewed federal-state partnership when it comes to providing services for Oregon`s most vulnerable citizens.

`When I signed a balanced biennial budget for Oregon in August of 2005, it was with the understanding that the long-standing partnership between the federal government and our state to deliver human services would continue,` the Governor said in his letter. `However, over the last six months, we have seen a dramatic erosion of federal support at a time when our human services needs are increasing.`

The Governor`s letter detailed the impacts that the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA), which passed earlier this year, and the President`s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2007 will have on Oregon`s ability to maintain the current level of essential services , particularly children and older Oregonians. The Governor cited three specific areas of concern:

Salem Garbage Truck Driver Strikes Power Pole at Camp Withycombe

Power has apparently been cut off to Camp Withycombe and several businesses in the area. PGE officials are on the scene working to restore power at this time.

(Clackamas) - A Salem garbage truck driver is uninjured after his vehicle apparently clipped a power pole outside the entrance to Camp Withycombe in Clackamas at 10101 SE Clackamas Rd.

Clackamas County deputies dispatched to the scene just before 10:00 AM this morning say they found the garbage truck, owned by the State of Oregon, had tipped on its side after pulling down the power pole. The driver of the truck, 60-year old Mike Kuhns of Salem, was not injured but they say he was trapped in the truck for a short time.

Charges Filed in Carlton Animal Abuse Case

(McMinnville) - Animal abuse investigators say they have completed an investigation into the alleged neglect of 12 horses at 11415 NE Hendricks Rd., Carlton, Oregon. Lt. Paul May with the Yamhill County Sheriff`s office says his agency worked cooperatively on the case with the Oregon Humane Society.

May says ten horses were taken into protective custody ranging in age from 2 to 11 years, adding that two horses on the property already died of alleged neglect.

Registration Underway For Oregon Women Veterans Conference in Albany

(Albany) - All women who served in the military are invited to register for the 2006 Oregon Women Veterans Conference. Organizers say this is an extremely important event for women veterans, because many remain unaware of numerous benefits they earned in the military that could be put to use.
