Op-Ed- Payday Loan Companies Should be Regulated

A senior citizen who took out a $100 payday loan for orthopedic shoes ended up having to pay back $900, that is an utterly shameful fact to have to report.

(Salem) - One of Oregon`s fastest growing industries, payday loan companies, remind me of what I have read of a period long ago, after the end of the Civil War. People in the south were destitute after the hostilities ceased and that`s when the carpetbaggers moved in. They took advantage of every weakness and milked and manipulated that last of the little that people had been able to save. Sure the people being run off their property were debtors, maybe even former slave owners, but that still gives no one a right to levy fines and interest levels that a poor person could never begin to pay.

17 Horses Seized From Molalla Residence

(Molalla) - Clackamas County deputies seized 17 horses from a residence in Molalla Wednesday, after serving a search warrant at 37390 S. Appleman Rd. This is the same residence where an 8-month-old horse was seized during the execution of a search warrant in February 2005. The deputies were assisted by members of the Oregon Humane Society and several volunteers.

Donald Ward faces charges stemming from four armed robberies in Keizer and Salem that left residents weary.

(Keizer) - Police have released the photo of a man arrested in to a string of armed robberies that began last December. Two of the armed robberies happened at the Keizer Walgreen`s store on River Road North, leaving clerks shaken but unharmed. One incident occurred at the Salem Walgreen`s on Lancaster Drive, and one robbery scene was a Blockbuster Video store, also on River Road North in Keizer.

Gyllenhaal Connects to Oregon by Portraying an Oregon Marine

(Salem) - Did you know that the Marine portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal in Jarhead is an Oregonian? I had the great opportunity of meeting the author of Jarhead and interviewing him in his Portland apartment right after the book hit the shelves. Anthony Swofford, portrayed by Gyllenhaal as a frustrated Marine in Desert Strom, is a nice guy who was very excited at the time about the book`s immediate success.

Mannix Says He`s Prepared to Implement Measure 37 if Elected

(Portland) - Kevin Mannix responded Wednesday to the Supreme Court's upholding of the property rights measure, Measure 37. "Now that the Supreme Court has spoken," said Mannix, "it is clear the debate will go back to the Governor and Legislature about how to implement the measure. My consistent track record of working with the legislature to implement citizen initiatives has prepared me to lead that discussion and I bring that strength to this race."

Oregon Supreme Court Upholds Measure 37

(Salem) - The Oregon Supreme Court upheld a voter-approved property rights law today, sweeping aside a lower-court ruling that said the measure was unconstitutional. Measure 37 requires governments to pay landowners for property value losses caused by regulation, or to forgo regulations. In today's ruling, the Supreme Court reversed a decision issued in October by Marion County Circuit Judge Mary James, who said Measure 37 violated the state and federal constitutions.
