(SUBLIMITY, Ore. ) - Santiam Canyon Stampede The 2014 Santiam Canyon Stampede kicks-off Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Sublimity Harvest Festival Grounds, 11880 Sublimity Road, just 10 miles east of Salem.

The Santiam Canyon Stampede was established in 1997 as a PRCA sanctioned rodeo. Following the 1999 season the rodeo was purchased by the community and re-organized as a nonprofit corporation.

Oregon`s Timber Harvest Climbs for 4th Straight Year

Timber harvest increases can be attributed to a strong export market for Oregon logs in 2013, coupled with a domestic market recovery, particularly in housing.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Timber In 2013, Oregon's timber harvest rose to 4.2 billion board feet, marking four consecutive years of increase from the recession low of 2.72 billion board feet in 2009.

"This was the first harvest above four billion board feet in seven years," said ODF principal economist Brandon Kaetzel, "and represents a 12 percent increase over the 2012 harvest of 3.75 billion board feet."

Governor Declares State of Emergency to Fight Wildfires

The Oregon National Guard is now authorized to deploy firefighting assets as needed throughout the fire season based on threat and resource shortfalls.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Wildfires Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber on Wednesday, verbally declared a state of emergency in response to wildfire activity across the state.

The emergency declaration enables the Oregon National Guard to mobilize resources on an as-needed basis to assist the Department of Forestry, the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office, and others with firefighting.

Family of Six Escapes Two Fires Near Silverton

The family, which included 4 children of various ages are being helped with housing and other items by the Red Cross.

(SILVERTON, Ore. ) - Silverton Oregon Fire A family of six is lucky to be alive Wednesday, after the motorhome they were living in caught fire, and spread quickly to a nearby home that their father was helping family members renovate.

Silverton firefighters were called to the two fires on Leikem Circle, just off Silverton Falls Highway east of the town of Silverton, at 3:37 p.m. Silverton Fire Chief Bill Miles tells Salem-News.com that the first crews on scene quickly called in a second alarm, which brought in extra crews and equipment from Mt. Angel and Drakes Crossing.

Oregon Businesses Report Large Number of Job Vacancies

The largest increase since last spring occurred in vacancies requiring a high school diploma, which doubled.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Employment Oregon businesses reported 11,700 more job vacancies in the spring of 2014 than they did the prior year. Businesses had approximately 46,900 job vacancies in the spring months of 2014, according to a Job Vacancy Survey recently completed by the Oregon Employment Department.

The last time vacancies were at this level was in 2008, before the Great Recession did its damage. In the spring of 2008, Oregon had 47,900 vacancies.

Salem, Oregon Grass Fire at 4-Alarms - UPDATE #2

Drivers using Salem-Dallas Highway in the next few hours should expect delays westbound as fire crews battle the blaze.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Salem Fire Salem, and other area firefighters are battling a large, high risk grass fire just off the Salem-Dallas Highway at College Drive.

The fire has gone to a 4th alarm, and fire crews from Keizer, Marion and Polk Counties are on the scene and have been battling the fire for about the past two hours in hot, dry conditions.

A couple of homes in the area have been evacuated in the area off Doaks Ferry Road.
