Oregon State Engineers Create Portable Radiation Detection Device

The system is a miniaturized gamma ray spectrometer, which means it can measure not only the intensity of radiation but also identify the type of radionuclide that is creating it.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Radiation Detection Device Nuclear engineers at Oregon State University have developed a small, portable and inexpensive radiation detection device that should help people all over the world better understand the radiation around them, its type and intensity, and whether or not it poses a health risk.


The device was developed in part due to public demand following the nuclear incident in Fukushima, Japan, in 2011, when many regional residents were unsure what level of radiation they were being exposed to and whether their homes, food, environment and drinking water were safe

ODF Tightens Fire Restrictions in North Cascade Forests

Eleven fires have burned 420 acres in the district so far this year.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Fire Season The hot, dry weather expected over the next several days has prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry to tighten fire safety restrictions in the North Cascade District, which provides wildfire protection to private and public forestlands in Clackamas, Marion, northern Linn and eastern Multnomah counties.

On July 11 a "Regulated-Use" closure went into effect, aimed at reducing the chance of fires starting from public activities in the forest.

Oregon highway 58, Willamette Highway, remains blocked approximately six miles east of Pleasant Hill after a double tanker truck, carrying more than 10,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline overturned.

One Dead, 11 Displaced After SE Portland Apartment Fire

Unfortunately, a 50-year-old man suffered severe burn injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the 911 callers reported that she could not get out of her apartment and was on the phone with emergency dispatchers when firefighters arrived and rescued her and her 4-year-old son.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Salem Arson Investigation A three alarm fire that gutted part of the Union Gospel Mission Thrift Store early Wednesday morning may have been intentionally set.

Salem police along with the Salem fire department are still investigating the cause of the fire, which was discovered by a railroad train engineer who noticed flames showing on the west side of the building.

National studies show that advisory speed signs have reduced overall crashes by 20 percent, reduced rear-end collisions by 30 percent and reduced secondary crashes by 40 percent.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Portland Oregon Traffic On Thursday, ODOT launched the first in a series of projects that use new technologies to improve safety, reduce secondary crashes and provide travelers with information to help them safely get to where they are going.

The ODOT RealTime systems employ sensors in and along the roads that will accurately convey travel times to motorists and establish advisory speed limits that will tell motorists to slow down for a crash, stall or other delay in the road ahead.
