On Saturday, Newport's chapter of the Surfrider Foundation together with the chapters in Portland and Siuslaw (Florence) will be holding the 6th Annual Otter Rock 'n' Roll Surf Contest and Beach Cleanup Challenge.

President Obama to Send 300 Troops to Iraq

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Firmly ruling out the possibility of American boots on the ground in Iraq in the face of escalating sectarian violence there, U.S. President Barack Obama announced on Thursday that he would nevertheless be sending 300 “military advisers” to Baghdad.

The President explained that the military personnel would be sent to Iraq to examine how to train and equip Iraqi forces, and this would come on the heels of Washington’s steps to increase its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations to better understand the threats to Baghdad.

Yet Obama appeared determined to hold firm to the view that U.S. combat troops would not return to Iraq as that could not resolve the core issues the country is currently facing.

Oregon State Police Captain Resigns After Guilty Plea

Thursday's guilty plea ended Jeff Lanz 15 year career with OSP.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The former head of the Oregon State Police Office of Professional Standards pled guilty Thursday, and was then sentenced in Linn County Circuit Court on one count of Official Misconduct in the First Degree.

Jeff Lanz was sentenced to 12 months of Bench Probation, and three days in jail.

Oregonians Urged to Leave Young Deer Alone

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says in just the past two weeks, wildlife biologists have reported several instances of people taking young deer fawns out of the wild.

ODFW says a well-meaning person finds a young deer fawn alone in the wild, assumes it is lost, orphaned or hurt, and takes it home with them to nurse it back to health. Not only is this a bad idea, it’s against the law.

3 Alarm House Fire Damages Independence Home

(INDEPENDENCE, Ore. ) - A three alarm house fire damaged a home on Third street Thursday morning in Independence.

Polk County Fire District No. 1 along with the Dallas, and Salem Fire Departments were able to quickly extinguish the fire, before it gutted the home.
