Mid-Valley Backyard Burn Ban Takes Effect on Monday

The restrictions will extend through October 15 or later, depending on fire danger.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A ban on all open and backyard burning will go into effect on Monday in Marion, Linn, and Benton counties.

The Oregon Department of Forestry and the fire defense boards of the three counties announced the ban, which aims to reduce the incidence of open debris burns escaping control.

As the rapid advance south by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) towards Baghdad appeared to slow over the weekend, fierce fighting erupted in the town of Tal Afar 40 miles west of Mosul near the Syrian border.

Eugene Man Tries to Escape Police by Jumping Into Willamette River

After a brief period in the water, the suspect said he was drowning and returned back to shore

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - A Eugene man wanted on a felony warrant was arrested by Oregon State Police after he tried escaping by running and then jumping into the Willamette River near Valley River Center.

His escape attempt came to an end when he realized he was going to drown if he stayed in the water, so he came back to shore where the trooper was waiting.

Oregon Officials Fear Adult and Senior Abuse Going Under Reported

Abused seniors are three more times likely to die from their injuries.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - There were over 35,000 calls to DHS in 2013 reporting suspected adult abuse; however state officials fear that there is a lot more vulnerable adult abuse in Oregon that is not reported to law enforcement or protective services officials.

"We know that national research suggests that under-reporting of abuse is a serious issue," said Marie Cervantes, Director, DHS' Office of Adult Abuse Prevention and Investigations.
