Little Hoover Commission Spotlights Jail Overcrowding

Current jail overcrowding has forced sheriffs of the executive branch into the untenable position of making decisions traditionally made by members of the judicial branch of government.

(YUBA CITY CA YubaNet) - California jail overcrowding A Little Hoover Commission review of county jail populations finds that county sheriffs, not judges, increasingly are making bail and sentencing decisions.

Done as a means to manage to jail overcrowding, this trend threatens to weaken local judicial authority, undermine public confidence in the judicial system, and raises serious questions regarding due process and the separation of powers.

TURKEY: Protesters Call for Resignation of Prime Minister Erdogan

More than 100,000 Turkish protesters have gathered at Istanbul’s Taksim Square, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan.

(ISTANBUL) - Riot police use tear gas to disperse the crowd during an anti-government protest at Taksim Square in central Istanbul on June 1, 2013. The protesters occupied the iconic Taksim Square on Saturday as part of their demonstration against the government’s decision to demolish Gezi Park and replace it with an Ottoman-era military barracks to be used as a shopping mall.

Police forces clashed with protesters, using tear gas and water cannons to disperse them.

Police often side with the judge because they can’t be objective due to working under that judge. This allows unethical judges to commit crimes, abuse victims and stay immune to prosecution.

US, UN Condemn Myanmar for `Two Child Rule`

UN deputy spokesman Del Buey told reporters that the United Nations was aware that Myanmar authorities planned to impose the two-child rule.

(RANGOON AFP) - This is a Rohingya child. The United Nations on Thursday called on Myanmar authorities to end a ban on families having more than two children in two Muslim-majority townships in a troubled state.

UN deputy spokesman Eduardo Del Buey said that pressing the policy in Rakhine state, where there have been widespread clashes between Buddhists and Muslims, would infringe "fundamental human rights".
