Western Oregon Hosting Conference on Autism

(Monmouth, Oregon) - Western Oregon University will play host to the Conference on Autism Spectrum Disorders on Saturday, April 29th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Pacific Room of Werner University Center.

The event is designed to bring together parents, educators, instructional assistants, administrators, medical professionals and more to talk about autism. Information provided will be geared toward both a biomedical and educational emphasis.

The schedule is as follows:

8:00 AM : 9:00 AM: Registration

9:00 AM : noon: Speakers

Stephen Edelson will present "Introduction to the Biological Interventions in Autism and How They May Enhance Learning: Part I."

Linda Lee will present "Introduction to the Biological Interventions in Autism and How They May Enhance Learning: Part II."

Karen Jordan will present "Educational Practices in Autism: What Research Says."

Mary-Minn Sirag will present "One Autist's Guide to Navigating the Neuronormal World." noon 1:30 PM: Table Talk Session (brown bag lunch)

Jason Rowe's table topic is "D.A.D. Dedicated Autism Dad."

Linda Lee's table topic is "Biological Interventions in Autism: One child's journey to improvement?"

Karen Jordan and Jennifer Rowan's table topic is "Ask the Teachers."

Shelley Joyce's table topic is "Aspergers: What Is It and What Helps?"

Mary-Minn Sirag's table topic is "One Autist's Guide to Navigating the Neuronormal World."

Lucinda Waddell's table topic is "Transitioning to the Next Phase: Life After High School."

Louisa Silva's table topic is "Research Results on Quigong Massage for Young Children."

1:30 PM 4:00 PM: Speakers

Jennifer Rowan will present "Behavior Strategies Functional Solutions."

Shelley Joyce will present "Aspergers: What is it and What Helps?"

The event will close with a question and answer panel where the attendees can ask the speakers and table talk facilitators questions.

A resource fair will be open throughout the event.

Organizations represented include: the Northwest Autism Foundation, Autism Society of Oregon, Help Autism Now Society, Oregon Parent Training and Information Center, Swindell Center, Parents of Autistic Children of Oregon and Life Span Respite.

The event is open to the public and there is no fee for the conference, however, a $15 donation to the Northwest Autism Foundation is requested.

Refreshments will be provided during the morning check-in and participants are encourage to bring a brown bag lunch for the lunch hour table talks, or visit a local restaurant.

The Conference on Autism Spectrum Disorders is sponsored by WOU and the Northwest Autism Foundation.
