(LYONS, Ore.) - Marion County deputies in Salem arrested a man on numerous charges this morning that stem from a stolen vehicle incident and a lengthly chase involving a deputy's K9.

36-year old Eric Ray Harvey, of Lyons, Oregon faces charges related to vehicle theft, and the assault and harassment of a police animal. He also faces charges for fleeing police.

Lt. Sheila Lorance with the Marion County Sheriff's Office, says shortly after 4:30 a.m., Salem Police told deputies they were attempting to locate a stolen 1997 Jeep and trailer with 4 ATV's on it.

The owner of the Jeep, trailer and ATV's reportedly saw the suspects stealing the vehicles from in front of his residence on Fisher Court NE.

Lorance says he attempted to follow them but was cut off by another vehicle that also appeared to be involved. The suspects were last seen near Sunnyview and Howell Prairie Road.

"A short time later, Marion County Deputies observed the suspect driving the stolen Jeep and ATV's in a field near Victor Point Road SE and Highway 214," Lorance said.

"However, by the time they got to it, the suspect who was later identified as Harvey, had abandoned the vehicle and left on foot."

She says deputies and a K-9 named Chico tracked Harvey for several hours and located him near 119th and Waldo Hills Road which was over 4 miles away from the vehicle.

"When they attempted to take him into custody Harvey continued to run and threw a stick at K-9 Chico before he was arrested."

Eric Harvey faces charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Attempted Assault on a Police Animal, Harassment of a Police Animal and Elude on Foot.

Lorance says Harvey was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail where he remains in custody.
