(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Portland Meadows will be hosting the second annual Portland Meadows BBQ Championship on Saturday August 16 and Sunday August 17 in the infield of the racetrack.

The event is being held in conjunction with a special single day of live racing on Sunday August 17.

The Portland Meadows BBQ Championship is a Pacific Northwest Barbecue Association sanctioned state BBQ Cook off. Up to thirty teams will be competing for $5,000 in prize money and the winner qualifies to cook at the American Royal: The World Series of BBQ in Kansas City and a chance at the Jack Daniel's World Invitational Championship in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

The two-day event begins Saturday August 16 at 5:00 P.M.

Cross over the racing surface and into the infield to watch champion pitmasters from around the Pacific Northwest begin to prepare the champion selection of meats: brisket, pork shoulder, pork ribs, and chicken. Some meats are cooked over twelve hours.

In addition, most competition teams will offer the option to purchase samples of various barbecue tastes. Samples will be available for a nominal fee ($1 - $3) with 20 percent of proceeds going to the Bald Faced Truth Foundation which helps children in our communities.

The Infield Beer Garden will be open and there will be TVs and betting machines to watch and wager the races from the best tracks across North America.

Stick around into the evening and at dusk (approximately 8:00 P.M.) we will have a special screening of the great horse racing movie Seabiscuit on our special 20 foot inflatable screen. Popcorn, candy, and other traditional movie theatre fare - in addition to the BBQ meats - will be available for purchase.

Beginning at 11:00 A.M. on Sunday August 17, come out and see competition barbecue in action. After an over night cook pitmasters furiously will turn in their meats to sanctioned PNWBA judges. Once again, sample championship barbecue from the best that the Northwest barbecue cooks have to offer.

The event is suitable for all ages and is a family friendly. The Infield Kids Zone with face painting, activities, and jumpy gyms will be open and available for an all inclusive fee of $5 per child.

The Shari’s Pie Eating Contest will feature a top prize of pie for a year and takes place at 3:00 P.M. Registration is only available on the day of the event.

Live horse racing will begin at 12:20 P.M. and the special card of racing will feature eight races going through 5:00 P.M. This special race day will feature both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred races.

There will be seating available in the infield but customers are encouraged to bring folding chairs, blankets, etc. Please note that outside food and beverages are not permitted.

As a special bonus on Sunday, Portland Meadows will be distributing valuable coupons worth over $50 to everyone of legal betting age (18+) to be used during the 2014-2015 live racing season that begins on Sunday October 12. The coupons will only be available on this one special day.

There is no charge for parking or admission to Portland Meadows or the BBQ Championship.
