(MOUNT ANGEL, Ore. ) - A standoff in the small Oregon town of Mount Angel ended in tragedy Saturday when a man took the life of his ex-girlfriend's mother, and then his own.
Salem-News.com was on-scene early Saturday morning where the stand-off between Daniel Cuanas and police from Mt. Angel, Silverton, Woodburn, and Marion County began around 2:34 a.m.
Police say Elizabeth Schwartz escaped with her 15-month-old son, and notified police, who responded to the home located at 775 St. Mary's Avenue. Her mother, Kathleen Schwartz, was still inside the home.
Cuanas on multiple occasions threatened to take his own life, and yelled at police to shoot him, neighbors told Salem-News.com.
On Facebook, Cuanas posted the words “sorry world” to his account at 2:33 a.m. Cuanas, attended North Marion High School, and was originally from Wauseon, Ohio. According to Elizabeth Schwartz's Facebook page the two became engaged on September 28, 2012.
Police worked very hard to get Cuanas to come out of the home, but at some point in the morning communication between police and Cuanas stopped, and that's when tactical officers were able to get a look into the home around 10:00 a.m., they saw him slumped over a gun.
Police then entered the home, and Cunas was found dead with a shotgun wound to the chest, and a handgun was found within arms reach.
Police are not sure yet if Kathleen Schwartz’s death occurred in the late hours Friday night, or early Saturday morning.
