(SALEM, Ore.) - Alter Weiner’s personal Holocaust story began brutally – with the murder of his father on September 11th, 1939. On the anniversary of this wrenching event, Weiner will share that beginning and the firestorm of events that followed in a special presentation at Salem Public Library.

Weiner will present “From a Name to a Number: A Holocaust Survivor’s Story” from 7:00 -8:30 PM Tuesday, September 11th in Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE. His presentation is free and open to the public. His recently published autobiography, “From A Name to A Number,” will be available for purchase at the event.

In Weiner’s talk, he discusses the murder of his father, and his subsequent removal from his home in Chrzanow, Poland. He was placed first in Blechhammer (a subcamp of Auschwitz). This was the first of five Nazi labor camps he would ultimately survive.

While facing the horrors of these five camps, Weiner dreamed of a day when he would be reunited with family members. This dream did not come true. In all, 123 of his family members were killed in the Holocaust.

Weiner survived, immigrating to the United States in 1960 to spend most of his adult life in New York. He currently lives in Hillsboro. In his talks, he focuses on the impact of the Holocaust on his life, stressing the importance of family and education.

Weiner has been a speaker for more than 340 audiences in Oregon and Washington including a previous appearance at both North Salem and South Salem high schools.

Carla: Appreciate your insightful kudos for Weiner. But remember: Ink and paper are what make history. Also that "all Socrates did was talk" -- true quote but don't know source...!!

What a courageous man, to relive such a disgusting time in history, and to keep the remembrance alive. When the brave survivors are gone, all that will be left is ink and paper.
