University of Alabama Shooting Leaves Several Dead

This is only the latest tragic school shooting to take place in the United States. It may however be very unique if it is determined that the female shooter is a staff member.

(HUNTSVILLE, Ala.) - Three people are confirmed to be dead at the University of Alabama, after a shooting that happened just after 4:05 today. Police say a suspect is in custody. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the shooter is a staff member of the school.

That word came from a local television station, WAFF; they quoted a police official saying they believed the shooter was a female staff member.

Huntsville city spokesman Ray Garner told Reuters that an additional person was injured. At this time the area is secured.

Garner told reporters that police swept the building to both look to check for additional victims, and to gather evidence. He confirmed that a woman was arrested, but he declined to identify her, or the shooting victims.

The Associated Press reports a city official named Trent Willis, who represents Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, saying several other people had also been shot. He did not claim to know the extent of their injuries.

Reuters reports that the university posted a message on its website advising students that the campus is closed, and that counseling will be available to them, but we have scanned the school's site and seen no reference to the event.

Needless to say, this is only the latest tragic school shooting to take place in the United States. It may however be very unique if it is determined that the shooter was a staff member.

The suspect in custody is staffmember Dr. Amy Bishop, a biology professor reportedly upset at having been denied tenure.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out; faculty shot in the science building having a discussion on the subject of biology, if you get my drift. Christian traditionalism is a southern trait and Alabama is no exception. I hope I am wrong, but I can't help but be suspicious. Should I be correct, it would be just another example of the power of Institutional Religion and the people who embrace it. Education is anathema to such as these and would be similar to killing abortion doctors. I HOPE I AM WRONG
