(NEW YORK CITY) - Roger Shuler (Credit: Shelby County Jail) On Monday I highlighted the case of Roger Shuler, an Alabama blogger currently under indefinite detention in a state prison after refusing to remove items from his blog in adherence to an injunction ruling. His detention is a striking abrogation of First Amendment protections.

Shuler’s is the only name listed from the Western Hemisphere in the Committee to Protect Journalists’ list of imprisoned news workers around the world.

Civil Rights Coalition Victorious in Suit Against Alabama`s Anti-Immigrant Law

Agreement Permanently Blocks Most of the Law’s Worst Provisions, Strictly Limits Racial Profiling Provision.

(MONTGOMERY, AL) - Alabama HB 56 protest The coalition of civil rights groups that challenged Alabama’s anti-immigrant law, HB 56, announced today an agreement that permanently blocks key provisions of the law and significantly limits racial profiling under sections 12 and 18, the “show me your papers” provisions.

A similar agreement is being entered in a case brought by the U.S. Department of Justice and also in one brought by church leaders. Both agreements are pending final approval by the court.

Alabama: Prevent Execution of Thomas Arthur

(DHAKA- Bangladesh) - The Honorable Robert Bentley Governor of the State of Alabama Since 1973, 140 persons—have been released from death row, after it was proven that they were in fact innocent of the crimes they were convicted of.

Some of the referenced prisoners were within days of being executed, and five of the 140 were in the state of Alabama. Alabama greatly risks taking the life of one of its own citizens for a crime he did not commit.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Tuskegee Experiments A new report details human experiments led by US researchers and drug companies on Africans who are typically undereducated, poor, and lack full understanding of their rights. The human subjects often are led to believe that they are receiving medical treatment from governmental health services or health ministries.

The report is titled “Non-Consensual Research in Africa: The Outsourcing of Tuskegee” in reference to the illegal human experiment conducted in Tuskegee, Alabama, on some 600 impoverished African-American men.
