'Whole Foods and Challah with GMOs'Ruth Levy for Salem-News.comSabbath blessing over the Challah: "Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, who brings forth bread from the earth."
(NEW YORK CITY) - Perhaps you are aware of the growing outrage over genetically engineered crops being kept unlabeled (corn, soy, canola, sugar beets, ....) despite the fact that the FDA hid 40,000 documents showing extreme toxicity before approving them, and that Purdue plant and animal pathologist Don Huber (and others) has evidence it is sterilizing animal herds, and Indonesian midwives are reporting pathogens in pregnant mothers and newborns, and scientists around the world have reporting gross deformities in amphibians and birth defects in human babies, since GE crops were planted. Sabbath is the holiest day in Judaism and Challah is central to it. So why is Whole Foods which ostensibly sells about organic food (straight from God, with no additions, no altering) selling a challah that has an ingredient in it not from the earth but altered in a lab and associated not only with infertile cattle and shrunken reproductive organs and extraordinarily high rates of spontaneous abortion, but also with diabetes and cancer? People go to WF for organic food. They go out of their way and spend a great deal more for organic (the only real food)? They are being misled by WF (the canola oil is in most of their deli items and in their soups, truffles, cookies, etc.). Their false aura of "organic" is a deceptive practice and one that brings in more profit as people desperately seek and pay more to eat truly pure real, safe food. But what WF is doing to a particular religious group around their holiest celebration Is a profound religious violation. The Jewish community is enjoined by God to keep the Sabbath and to keep it holy. How is that possible when a central part of it is toxic? How is it possible for people to thank God for the blessing of bread because it sustains them, using something destructive of life itself? If Jews are to keep the Sabbath holy, is rejecting the toxicity of the Challah, and demaning absolute purity of Challah, not part of that?
