(Salem) - One of the greatest soul bands ever to funk their way to fame was Tower of Power.

Their most enduring song, "What is Hip?" is undiscovered by Generation Y. Let them take a moment to reflect on a few of the lyrics and swirl them around in their brain pans.

What is hip? Tell me tell me if you think you know.
What is hip? And if you're really hip, the passing years would show
That you into a hip trip. Maybe hipper than hip.

WHAT IS HIP?

There's one thing you should know: What's hip today might become passé.

What will be hip when the generation designation passes from Y to Z, from Z to AA to BB before settling onto CC? Today hippies are mocked as burn-outs and Gen Y teens ape the peace sign and snigger "Peace, man." How much longer will it be before Gen Y becomes a target of ridicule? How will these times be mischaracterized and mocked? Mister Sid has some ideas.

"What is Hip?" lyrics copyright 1973 by Composed by Emilio Castillo, David Garibaldi, Stephen Kupka.
