'Brooklyn Boy' - In Memory of Leiby Kletzky by Agron Belica

The life of that innocent child was ripped away from all of us...

Leiby Kletzky
Leiby Kletzky

(BOSTON) - A child was laid to rest in the darkness; an innocent lost and innocence lost.

Donne wrote, "Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind." How much more are we involved when the death is that of an innocent child, murdered senselessly by someone he trusted to guide him to his loving parents? The child was their hope for the future. I am not a Jew, but the death of this innocent boy diminishes me personally because I am part of a society in which such atrocities can still occur.

Author, singer, and songwriter Agron Belica, who has a son about the same age as Leiby Kletsky, was deeply affected by the news of the small boy's sad death. How can anyone betray an innocent child in that way? How can anyone be capable of such an act? And what about the parents? How can they bridge the loss of a beloved child? How great will be their suffering when they look at his empty chair and his empty bed! Their anguish must be unimaginable.

Such thoughts inspired Agron, a Muslim, to write this song "Brooklyn Boy" In Memory of Leiby Kletsky expressing his own deeply personal feelings about the tragically truncated life of the small Jewish boy in Brooklyn.

We are all united by the horror of this senseless murder of a small trusting boy, Leiby, that has devastated a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Whatever our faith—Jew, Muslim, Christian, etc.— we share their mourning. May their faith strengthen them in their sorrow and anguish.

Conclusion by Tim King:

If there is a dry eye over this one; the ultra senseless death of little Leiby Kletzky in Brooklyn, I could never understand, or explain it. The life of that innocent child was ripped away from all of us, because he was us, just like in so many other cases.

'Brooklyn Boy' - In Memory of Leiby Kletzky by Agron Belica, is a tribute that had to be written, but should not have to have been.

Every time Agron releases a new song, it blows me away. It is the new style, newsic, and it brings current events into the popular culture better than almost any medium could.

Once you listen to this you will either understand, or more completely understand the concept. This is not a time on earth to sing songs that fail to account for the reality of our situation. Newsic allows a solid interpretation of tragedy in ways that chill the listener to the bone.

Agron's songs about Vittorio Arrigoni, the murdered activist who also was ripped away from humanity at large, the Tamil Genocide in Sri Lanka, the plight of the Palestinians - they are a source of inspiration for so many of us, from the west coast of the U.S. to Gaza and every point in between.

what was your reason for composing this song?

Editor: Agron can comment as he wishes, but I think the reason is obvious, the loss is tragic.

Guess people can't accuse you of being anti Semite anymore. Thanks for publishing this important piece, Tim King.

Tim King: Oh don't expect too much, but thanks.  It is the most ridiculous unfounded charge ever made.

Agron, I've been keeping up on your music, you are talented.  This is such a tragedy, glad you took the time to honor the life of this poor little boy!

Religion, skin color, country of national origin . . . none of these things matter. A child is a child . . . an innocent hope for a better tomorrow . . . someone to be protected until his or her wings can unfold and they can take flight. My heart goes out to the Kletzky family and to all of the brotherhood of man, for surely, we have all lost a great deal as a result of this childs death.
