(EUGENE, Ore. ) - It was an exciting day for local track and field fans who were treated to a day full of finals at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships before the world’s best competed in the Run TrackTown High Performance Meet at Hayward Field.
Oregon incoming freshman Ariana Washington helped bring home a gold medal with her leg on the USA’s 4x100 relay which cruised to a win in 43.46. Washington, who finished seventh in the 100 on Wednesday, was happy to finish the meet on a high note.
“This is my new home, so a gold medal at my new home is the most amazing feeling,” Washington said. “I just can’t wait to be an Oregon Duck.”
Christian Brennan ran the third leg on Canada’s 4x400 team which finished second in its heat and qualified for Sunday’s final with a time of 3:34.88.
Former Duck Jordan McNamara stormed down the home stretch to win the men’s 1,500 at the high performance meet, sneaking along the inside to edge Kyle Merber and Pat Casey with a time of 3:39.03.
Trevor Dunbar took fifth in 3:40.07 and AJ Acosta finished seventh in 3:40.42.
A pair of Oregon NCAA 800-meter champions competed in the 4x800 event.
Laura Roesler was part of the winning all-star team, running the third leg and handing off to Ajee Wilson in the lead. Wilson held on down the final 100 to clock a time of 8:07.65. Roesler said it was a little strange running in Eugene for the first time as a professional, not sporting the “O” on her chest.
“I’ll always be a Duck so it’s not like I lost something,” Roesler said. “I just gained more.”
Elijah Greer was part of the OTC men’s 4x800 team which took second in 7:16.41.
Britney Henry took fourth in the women’s hammer throw of 221-11 (62.96m).
