Salem Public Library Kicks Off its Annual Summer Reading ClubSalem-News.com
(SALEM) - Pet lovers of all kinds are invited to join the 2006 Summer Reading Club, "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales." The summer reading fun begins on Tuesday, June 6th as we begin sign-ups at the main library, the West Salem Branch, on the Bookmobile, or online at www.salemlibrary.org. Registrations are accepted through August. The summer reading club and special summer programs are free to participants. All children are encouraged to participate, from babies to high schoolers. As participants count the hours they spend reading or listening to stories, they earn Book Bucks to spend in the Reading Club Store at the end of the summer, or raffle tickets to try to win one of the special prizes donated by local businesses and organizations. Two kick-off events are planned this year: A "Read to Me Club" Preschool Carnival is offered from 10:00AM to 12:00 noon Tuesday, June 6th in the Anderson Rooms A&B. Preschoolers are invited to kick off the Summer Reading Club fun at a special Carnival offering a variety of fun games and the chance to be among the first to register for the Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales Summer Reading Club! All preschoolers who join the "Read to Me Club" will receive 10 tickets to play the carnival games. The Salem Public Library will be live on the local airwaves, with KYKN and KCCS broadcasting from the Central Library Children's Room from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM Saturday, June 10th. Scott Mills will help kick off Summer Reading Program with music, prizes, and lots of silliness. Kids who listen and come by to sign up for the Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales Summer Reading Program will have the chance to win special prizes and even be on the air! Free weekly programs are offered at the Central Library and the West Salem Branch beginning the week of June 19th. Events include craft days, music performances, author appearances, and live theater. Details are available at the Salem Public Library website at www.salemlibrary.org. The Summer Reading Club is sponsored by the Friends of Salem Public Library. More information is available at the Youth Services Reference Desk in person or by phone at 503-588-6088.
