Linn County Deputy Involved Shooting UpdateSalem-News.com
(ALBANY, Ore.) - Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller is providing updated information to Saturday night's deputy-involved shooting on Gap Road near Brownsville.
At approximately 11 p.m. on Saturday, the Linn County 911 center received a call reporting a prowler at 25288 Gap Road. A deputy responded and learned that someone may have broken into an outbuilding on the property. As the deputy was investigating the scene, a suspect vehicle attempted to run him over.
The deputy fired his service weapon at the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle fled the scene but was found minutes later stuck in a field off Lake Creek Drive near Seefeld Drive, approximately 5 miles from the Gap Road property.
Deputies discovered two occupants in the vehicle. The driver was found deceased and the passenger was taken into custody without incident.
The deceased person has been identified as Jesse Drew Seeley, age 26, from Albany. Following an autopsy conducted today, it was determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
The passenger in the vehicle was Shane Michael Atterberry, age 31, transient. He was arrested on a probation violation warrant from Klamath County. He was lodged in the Linn County Jail.
The deputy involved in the shooting is David Francis, age 38. Following standard practice in these incidents, he has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation.
He has been a patrol deputy for the Linn County Sheriff's Office for 3 1/2 years. Prior to that, he worked for 5 years as a full time deputy and 7 years as a reserve deputy with the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation in conjunction with the Linn County District Attorney's Office.
