RNC Condemns Attacks on Paul Rusesabagina by Kagame Regime

The RNC calls upon the Kagame regime to lay off Rwandans who have a different opinion than its own...

Paul Rusesabagina
Paul Rusesabagina of 'Hotel Rwanda'

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - From the moment the Lantos Foundation for Human Rights announced that Paul Ruseabagina was the choice for the 2011 Lantos Human Rights Award for his role in sheltering Rwandans at Mille Collines Hotel in 1994, Kagame’s regime immediately came out with attacks against him in hopes the award would be withdrawn.

In keeping with its trademark tradition of savaging its opponents, the Kagame regime outed its full arsenal of dirty attacks: using co-opted newspapers to hurl false accusations against him and spew hatred on him, directing associations of those who survived by finding shelter in that same hotel to smear him with lies and slander him, flooding the Lantos organization with written demands that it cancel the award, etc.

The RNC vigorously condemns these despicable attacks the Kagame regime continues to launch against its opponents. These attacks clearly defeat and unmask the sugar-coated rhetoric of the regime that it is serious in pursuing reconciliation among Rwandans and self-esteem.

As a reminder, President Kagame and his senior advisors are on record praising Paul Rusesabagina’s actions after previewing the movie Hotel Rwanda that featured Paul’s heroic feat which continues to receive worldwide acclaim. Attacks against Rusesabagina did not start until he publicly criticized the killings and other gross violations by the Kagame regime.

The RNC calls upon the Kagame regime to lay off Rwandans who have a different opinion than its own, and to allow them to fully enjoy their freedoms, including receiving awards they deserve. Instead, it is President Kagame and his wife the First Lady of Rwanda who must stop their terrible wasteful spending of Rwandan taxpayers’ money by staging self-promoting events and heavy lobbying for undeserved awards and prizes.

The RNC would like to thank the Lantos Foundation for showing concern about peace in Rwanda and reconciliation among Rwandans by recognizing Paul Rusesabagina’s life-saving and heroic action during a time of extreme danger.

Aimable November 17, 2011 5:14 am (Pacific time)

A lot of cooking here the RNC spokesman servant of Paul Rusesabagina. Theogene Rudasingwa will have to do it as a task so this all the usual propaganda. I hope the conerned parties will get the truth on ground and avoid wasting time. Rwanda is better it was before with no contribution on the likes of Theogene and lets but sure of some facts of 1200 people were saved under the one man show. Its sad for the survivors for such people to take advantage and even get rewarded Lantos continue this act is discrediting both for the foundation and the people who are part of it.

Hey Marie Collins! If you were not there (Hotel Milles Collines) it is wrong to think that you know better than RNC. Some of RNC members are former Kagame Army commanders!Do you really think you know better than then about the war in Rwanda? Ask your Canadian Romeo!!! How many people did he help? did you remember to demonstrated against Gen Romeo??? If not you should remember to do so otherwise you are bias about the story!!!!!

@Marie don't you remember when Kagame and the rest of the RPF heaped praise on Rusesabagina? Where do you get your information about Rusesabagina? Why do you think they changed their minds? Rusesabagina is a threat to them - he was very popular and being a Hutu (with a Tutsi wife) he could have probably won the next presidential election if he wanted

@ Marie Collins November 16, 2011 3:37 am (Pacific time)

@ Marie Collins; Ur mind/brain has been demaged by a terrible VIRUS, it seems! We (Rwandans) testify what we come through ...! Dear U don't know Kagame ..., shame on U who sing a song U'd never wrote!

I wonder if the RNC and their supporters know how ridiculous they sound when the make these statements! I am a Canadian who is proud to say that I also campaigned to stop Rusesabagina from speaking to our children at the We Day event here in my home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I can assure you that neither President Kagame nor anyone from his government contacted me to support the survivors of Hotel Milles Collines! It may come as a surprise to you but there are many people who are not Rwandan who know the true story of the Milles Collines. The people hurling accusations and spewing hatred are the RNC, Paul Rusesabagina and their supporters!
