(Portland, Oregon) - Hunger doesn't choose sides. But, when it comes to the Civil War Food Battle, you can choose sides. In fact, the Oregon Food Bank Network encourages you to do so.

Duck fans and Beaver fans will compete in the Civil War Food Battle to see who can generate the most donations for their regional food banks. Through a special partnership with the Oregon Food Bank Network, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, Oregonians can battle hunger together – Civil War style.

"We are teaming up to create a mobile text drive that will reach participants state-wide and encourage football fans to text a $5 or $10 donation to help feed our hungry neighbors," says Darrel Kau, FOOD For Lane County development director. "With the sobering truth that Oregon is among the top five hungriest state in the nation, the opportunity to rally together around the Civil War game to raise money for all 20 food banks in the state is fantastic."

Earlier this year, Americans used their cell phones to send text messages pledging more than $30 million for Haiti disaster relief efforts, according to Mobile Giving Foundation. Excited about using that model to raise funds for hunger relief, FOOD For Lane County applied to MGF to establish the four (4) keywords for the "Civil War Food Battle" text campaign. Texting GoDucks5 or GoBeavs5 to 20222 will result in a $5 donation. Texting GoDucks10 or GoBeavs10 to 20222 will result in a $10 donation.

Oregon has been hit especially hard by this recession. With Ducks and Beavers all over the state, this fundraising drive will benefit the entire food bank network from Astoria to Ontario, providing financial help to all 20 regional food banks in the Oregon Food Bank Network, including Oregon Food Bank Metro Services in Portland, Oregon Food Bank West in Beaverton, Southeast Oregon Regional Food Bank in Ontario and The Regional Food Bank of Tillamook County in Tillamook.

The one-time donation of $5 or $10 will be added to your mobile phone bill or deducted from your prepaid balance. Messaging & Data Rates May Apply. All charges are billed by and payable to your mobile service provider. Service is available on most carriers. Donations are collected for the benefit of the Oregon Food Bank Network by the Mobile Giving Foundation and subject to the terms found at www.hmgf.org/t.
