(GERVAIS, Ore.) - Marion County deputies have identified the victim of a fatal train vs. pedestrian collision early Saturday morning, as 53-year old Anna Emerikov, of Gervais. Her family has been notified. No information has been developed as to why she was on the tracks.

Marion County Sheriff spokesman Don Thomson, says deputies responded to a report of a train versus pedestrian accident on the Union Pacific tracks one mile north of Gervais, at approximately 2:00 a.m. Saturday. Thomson says Deputy Thomas Barber arrived, and determined that a southbound Union Pacific train struck the female now identified as Anna Emerikov, of Gervais, who was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries.

The conductor and engineer told investigators the train was traveling approximately 46 mph when they observed something lying in the tracks ahead, Thomson said.

"Both indicated it is common to have garbage bags discarded on the tracks in this rural area. As the train got closer, they realized the object was a body lying between the tracks. They initiated procedures to stop the train, but the 2-engine, 2700' long freight train took almost a mile to stop."

Union Pacific Investigators were assisting with the investigation, which Thomson says is on-going. No further information is available at this time. No photos from the scene are available.
