(CLERMONT, Fla.) - The Israeli nuclear weapons whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu was born 56 year ago, on 14 October 1954. The former Israeli nuclear technician, in citing his opposition to weapons of mass destruction, went public with the details of Israel's nuclear weapons program to the British press in 1986.

Shortly after that he was lured to Italy by a Mossad spy, drugged, kidnapped by Israeli intelligence agents.

He was transported to Israel and ultimately convicted in a trial that was held behind closed doors. Regarded by peace activists as a hero for taking a stand against weapons proliferation, Vanunu has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize many times.

Vanunu was imprisoned for 18 years, and well over half of that time was spent in solitary confinement. Finally set free in 2004, Israel has closely monitored Vanunu's life ever since, with endless political restrictions of his right to speak freely and to travel. He has also been banned from providing interviews to foreign journalists.

Israel's statehood was contingent upon upholding the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Within that context, Article 13:2 affirms: Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

Article 19 guarantees: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Berlin, October 13th 2010

Dear Mr. Vanunu,

On behalf of the Executive Board of the International League for Human Rights I am sending you our congratulations on your birthday.

In the face of the recent disappointments and ongoing hardships, that you have to stand, we wish you sound physical and mental health, BIG success and joy.

May your good energies, your courage, and your resoluteness stay with you.

May your strong message stay with us.

We are determined to publish the unbelievable denial of your civil rights to leave Israel, as well as to freedom of movement and speech by the Israeli Supreme Court together with our outspoken demand to enable you to receive the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Medal personally in Berlin on December 12th this year.

Hence have a happy birthday today!

Millions of people all over the world are on your side!

It is our honour to stand with you!

Many greetings from Berlin Fanny-Michaela Reisin (President)
