(LAS VEGAS) - USA basketball photoThe USA Men's Senior National Team (5-0) utilized a 24-4 second quarter run to close the door on Puerto Rico (1-4) and lock up a berth into the FIBA Americas Championship 2007 semifinals with a 117-78 win Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The win, the USA's 32 consecutive win in Olympic qualifying play dating back to 1992, kept the USA on top of the second round standings with also undefeated Argentina, and more importantly assured the U.S. of a spot in the Sept. 1 semifinals.

Organizers Cancel Champ Car Grand Prix Arizona

Jensen indicated that this decision has no effect on the Vegas Grand Prix, which is scheduled to start the season for the 2008 Champ Car series.

(PHOENIX) - paul tracy photoAfter nearly two years of planning and preparing for Grand Prix Arizona, the organizers of this Champ Car race have determined that it is no longer viable and are therefore canceling the event for 2007.

“An event of this magnitude requires considerable corporate support and though we did establish some outstanding partnerships, there were simply not enough of these to create economic viability,” said Dale Jensen, owner and managing member of the sports property.

Willamette Football Ready for Season Opener at Western Oregon

Willamette enters the 2007 season with depth and experience at quarterback.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Willamette Brandon BennettHead Coach Mark Speckman and the Willamette University football team have set high expectations for themselves regarding the 2007 season.

The players and coaching staff concentrated on quality during spring practices, remained focused throughout the offseason and arrived at preseason camp ready to practice and compete with great effort and determination.

As a result, Speckman and his team anticipate great improvement over 2006, when the Bearcats finished 2-7, including 2-4 in the Northwest Conference (5th place).

Women's Soccer: Warriors Fall to Cougars, 3-2

The Warriors are next in action on Thursday when they host the 2007 National Christian College Athletic Association national runner-up, The Master's College.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Corban Jessica MatthewsThe sophomore tandem of Marissa Walter and Jessica Matthews each scored a goal, as Corban's women's soccer team fell victim to a pair of last minute goals by Mount Vernon Nazarene and were defeated, 3-2, on Tuesday in the Warriors' home opener.

After a scoreless 37-plus minutes, Walter took a through ball from senior Sara Laughlin and poked the ball past a diving MVNU keeper and into the back of the net for the game's opening goal.

With the loss, Corban is now 1-1-0 on the young 2007 campaign. Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon Nazarene improves to 1-1-0 on the season.

The game will be played at Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium; start time is 7:00 p.m.

The Oregon State women’s soccer team will return seven of eleven starters this season.

Oregon Ducks - Houston Cougars Pregame Notes

The Ducks have amassed a 25-1 record in non-conference games in Autzen Stadium during Mike Bellotti’s head coaching tenure.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - oregon ducks football Oregon hosts Houston in the season opener for both schools on Saturday at Autzen Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. PDT.

The Ducks and Cougars have matched up twice before, with Oregon prevailing on both occasions - once in Eugene in 1983 (15-14) and more recently at Houston in the 2005 season opener (38-24).

The Ducks have won 20 of their last 23 season openers, including last season’s 48-10 home victory over Stanford.

Ducks Take Undefeated Record to Baylor Invitational

Oregon captured its third consecutive Oregon Kickoff Classic title at its annual season-opening tournament last Saturday.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - oregon volleyball photoOregon will be the only undefeated team heading into this weekend’s Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas.

The Ducks first test is set for 2:00 p.m. (PST) Friday against Mississippi State (2-1) at the Ferrell Center.

On Saturday, Oregon will play two matches, first against Stephen F. Austin (1-2) at 9:00 a.m. (PST) and lastly against host Baylor at 5:00 p.m. (PST).

Gators Top Wolves in Soccer Opener

WOU soccer squad falls to SF State, 2-0.

(SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.) - San Francisco State sent 15 shots at the Western Oregon goal and two of them found the net during a 2-0 women’s non-conference soccer victory over the Wolves on Thursday afternoon. It was the season opener for both teams.

The Gators used goals from Myriah Johnson and Melina Triantos to secure the win. Johnson scored just a little over 19 minutes into the contest on a cross served by Kate Donaldson, while Triantos added the insurance goal early in the second half.
