A Glimpse of Jewish Warsaw

A new exhibition, “Miasto i oczy” (“The City and the Eyes”), dedicated to Kipnis’s photographic legacy, has opened at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.

(WARSAW) - Warsaw Ghetto Menachem Kipnis is known to Jewish history as a cultural figure who worked across several fields. Born in Uzhmir, Ukraine in 1878, Kipnis distinguished himself as a singer, ethnomusicologist and journalist.

As a singer he was the first Jewish tenor in the Warsaw Opera (1902-1918) and along with his wife, Zimra Zeligfield, he was among the most important early singers of Yiddish folksongs.

Strong Beekeepers Protest and motion for a ban of the GM maize MON810 in Poland!

(WARSAW) - Anti-MON810 protest in Poland A powerful symbolic drama was staged by members of The Coalition for a GMO Free Poland in which thousands of dead bees were laid out on the Ministry steps.

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Sawicki, never appeared. However he later saw a delegation in his office and, during a public broadcast, announced that he had set in motion a ban of the GM maize MON810.

Visiting Auschwitz

As non-Jews, our visit to Auschwitz was sobering. we cannot imagine what a visit must be for a Jew, especially someone who has lost family members at Auschwitz or at another concentration camp.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Auschwitz camp watchtower (Photo by Judi Iranyi) We just returned from a tour of Central Europe. We visited Warsaw, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, and Prague.

On our drive from Warsaw to Krakow, we stopped at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oswiecim, renamed Auschwitz when the town and the surrounding area were incorporated within the Third Reich.

(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) - Scene from A Film Unfinished I have no problem taking a hard look at the claim of six million Jewish people having perished during the Holocaust.

It seems distinctly possible that the figure has been inflated to further underscore the tragedy of the Jewish people. Maybe it has.

Plane Crash in Russia: Tragedy for Poland

New presidential elections will be held before June 20.

(SMOLENSK / PATAGONIA) - Tupolev TU-154 A large contingent of high ranking Polish civilian and military leaders were killed this morning in a fiery crash at an airport near Smolensk in Russia.

Among the dead is Lech Kaczynski, Poland’s president who was en route to a memorial to honor Polish victims of a WW II massacre by the Soviet KGB.

Polish President and Top Officers Die in Plane Crash

The crash occurred about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) from Smolensk Airport in foggy conditions.
