Construction Zone Crash Spares Major Injuries

Witness reported a teen's driving behavior prior to the crash as being somewhat erratic.

(SUTTLE LAKE, Ore.) - Oregon construction crash scene 8-8-07 A three vehicle rear end collision occurred today in a posted construction zone on Hwy 20 W near Suttle Lake. The crash was reported at 1:20 PM.

The construction zone was well posted with three signs prior to the flagging operation. The signs read Road Work Ahead; Be Prepared to Stop and a sign with picture of a worker holding a sign saying Next Mile.

Women Trapped in Vehicle Overnight After Crash Into Columbia River

Family members and friends discovered the vehicle down the embankment at about 4:30 PM today.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Crash scene along Columbia River in Oregon, 8-8-07 A 19-year old Gresham woman was trapped in her vehicle overnight after being involved in a crash that ended with her vehicle coming to rest 50 feet down a steep embankment along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Roxann Marie Pope was trapped in her 1991 Chevrolet Blazer overnight and into this afternoon before she was located and brought to safety, according to Lt. Jason Gates, Public Information Officer with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

Gas Leak Evacuates Salem Hospital Psychiatric Building

The cause of the leak was determined to be a fitting that gave way while NW Natural Gas worked on the lines.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Natural gas leak in Salem, Oregon 8-8-07 Northwest Natural Gas Employees were working on a 1-inch gas line in front of Salem Hospital's Psychiatric Building today when a fitting gave way, causing a gap in the line. It happened at 12:22 PM.

Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says gas started to enter the building where 20 patients and 20 employees were located and they were quickly evacuated.

Motorists should avoid the area as crews work to bring the problem under control.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Hospital in Oregon The Salem Fire Department is dealing with a gas leak at the psychiatric building maintained by Salem Hospital. A one inch gas line there has been ruptured.

News Darkens for Trapped Miners in Utah

The facility has a history of problems, which include 325 citations issued by mine inspectors since the beginning of 2004. 116 of those were considered "Significant and Substantial" by federal standards.

(HUNTINGTON, Utah) - Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah Heavy machinery has been brought in to the site of a collapsed coal mine in Utah where six miners are trapped.

Rescuers are hoping that the equipment can help them reach the trapped men 1,500 feet below the surface of the earth.

A representative of the Murray Energy Corp. of Cleveland says they do know where the men are. It was not clear though if they have adequate breathing equipment, lights and emergency food supplies.

Welding Starts Shed on Fire

The Salem Fire Department would like to remind citizens to be careful with open flames during this hot, dry summer.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - salem shed fire The Salem Fire Department responded to a call for a shed fire at 5386 Aster St. NW at 4:41 PM on Wednesday.

First arriving firefighters reported that smoke was coming from the shed and flames were seen in the nearby trees as they arrived.

Fire Damages Keizer Home

While crews were busy with the fire, they received another call for a motor vehicle accident on Wittenberg Lane NE.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - Inside view of the cab of a Keizer Fire engine A passing motorist alerted Keizer Fire District firefighters of a house fire early Wednesday evening at 4815 Verda Lane NE.

Fire District Spokesman Jim Trett says the driver saw smoke and flames coming from the single family residence. The structure suffered fire damage in the kitchen and attic areas and the rest of the structure suffered smoke damage. Nobody was injured.

Blast in New York Reminiscent of Another Disaster

The blast near Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal sent plumes of smoke into the air, at least one person was hurt.

(NEW YORK) - NY explosion 7 18 07 It is an eerie feeling for New Yorkers; an underground explosion ripped a sidewalk apart near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 41st Street. Smoke rose into the air and the scene looked to some, like a rehash of the city's darkest day.

News sources report that nearly 200 New York City firefighters are on the scene, banded together in large numbers once again to protect the citizens of America's best known city.

Field Fire South of Jefferson Burns 25 Acres

The fire apparently was started by a combine.

(JEFFERSON, Ore. ) - jefferson fire photo Jefferson firefighters, with the assistance of firefighters from Albany and Turner responded to another grass fire south of Jefferson on Shady Bend Rd. located in Linn County at 1:10 PM Thursday afternoon.

This is the same area where firefighters battled a four-alarm field fire that ended up burning 60 acres on Tuesday of this week.
