(LOS ANGELES) - Los Angeles City Hall A new law banning single-use plastic bags in Los Angeles, passed with a 9-1 city council vote, went into effect on the first of January. Los Angeles is the most populous city in the U.S. to enact an ordinance ending this business practice which is called highly wasteful by environmental groups.

It will take some getting used to, but the ban does closely mirror the ordinance adopted by unincorporated L.A. County in 2011, reports Laist.com

Supreme Court Denies Family Farmers the Right to Self Defense from Monsanto Abuse

Farmers had sought Court protection under the Declaratory Judgment Act that should they become the innocent victims of contamination by Monsanto's patented gene-splice technology they could not perversely be sued for patent infringement.

Farmers vs. Monsanto

Organic Seed Growers, Family Farmers File Brief in Final Appeal to U.S. Supreme Court to Protect Their Crops from Contamination and to Invalidate Monsanto's GMO Patents.

(NEW YORK) - Jim Gerritsen, OSGATA President Last week, the Public Patent Foundation filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the landmark case, Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) et al v. Monsanto, in the hopes that the highest court in the land would hear and reinstate the case of 73 American organic and conventional family farmers, seed businesses and public advocacy groups that seek protection for America's farmers from Monsanto's frivolous patent infringement lawsuits, and their promiscuous genetically engineered pollen.

The groups are also seeking to invalidate the patents on 23 of Monsanto's GMO crops.

`Stop GMOs`: Russian Scientists Urge 10-Year Ban on Genetically Modified Products

In September, Russian authorities temporarily suspended the import and sale of Monsanto’s genetically modified corn after a French study suggested it may be linked to cancer.

(MOSCOW RT) - GMO crops in Russia Russian scientists are calling for a 10-year moratorium on GMOs to thoroughly study their influence on human health, stressing that such examinations are vital.

"It is necessary to ban GMO, to impose moratorium [on it] for 10 years. While GMO will be prohibited, we can plan experiments, tests, or maybe even new methods of research could be developed,” vice president of Russia’s National Association for Genetic Safety, Irina Ermakova, told Interfax news agency.
