Environment News: Mass Slaughter of Marine Mammals Considered

Controversies over sea lion populations have erupted at different places along the Baja California Peninsula in recent years.

(LAS CRUCES, N.M.) - Sea lions on the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula Arguably, it hasn’t been the easiest time for sea lions on the Pacific Coast of the United States and Mexico. In Washington state’s Puget Sound, several animals have been shot to death in recent months.

Last winter, the large sea lion population that usually dazzles tourists at San Francisco’s famed Pier 39 suddenly high-tailed it out the bay, only to gradually return in reduced numbers months later.

Baja California News: Outcry Follows Migrant`s Death

The death is currently under investigation by the San Diego Police Department’s homicide unit.

(SAN YSIDRO, Calif.) - Port at San Ysidro A Mexican national who died after a confrontation with US border agents has become the latest symbol of the crisis surrounding US-Mexico relations and migrant affairs.

Anastasio Hernandez Rojas died in a California hospital May 31, following a violent encounter with US Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Commerce News: Migrant Remittances Down, Up

Long-term trends favor migrant remittances as Mexico’s principal source of foreign exchange in the future.

(LAS CRUCES, N.M.) - Money headed for Mexico In the first trimester of 2010, the amount of dollars sent by migrant workers in the US to Mexico registered the worst seasonal plunge in five years, the Bank of Mexico reported this week.

According to the country’s central bank, about $6.6 billion in remittances entered the country’s economy during the first four months of 2010. The sum was nearly 9 percent less than the $7.25 billion received during the same period in 2009.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Manuel Garcia-Ceja and Lorenzo Garcia-Ceja Salem Police report that two brothers, both fugitives from the law on major investigations, have been apprehended in Mexico.

Police say Lorenzo Garcia-Ceja and his brother, Manuel Salvador Garcia-Ceja, were apprehended in Zamora, Mexico on the morning of June 3rd.

New Mexico state Senator Mary Kay Papen has taken many a memorable truck ride on the bumpy roads of the numerous communities in her district called colonias. The Dona Ana County lawmaker says she even once donned work boots to wade through a street where sewage was spilling onto the surface.
