Marine veteran remembers visit by Colonel Gregory (Pappy) Boyington, the Marine Corps’ highest ranking Ace from WW II, who died 22 years ago today.

(SOMERDALE, NJ) - Salem-News.com It’s not often that you get to ‘stand inspection’ for a Medal of Honor winner. The word was passed that Colonel Gregory (Pappy) Boyington, WW II Medal of Honor and Navy Cross recipient with VMF-214, would be visiting MCAS El Toro and the Marine Wing Service Group-37 tomorrow.

This was a big deal. Medal of Honor winners do not pay visits every day. Pappy Boyington was the highest ranking WW II Ace in the Marine Corps.

Israeli Military Demolitions Further Threaten al-Bweireh Neighborhood

Israeli settlers often attack this Palestinian neighborhood while the men of are away during the day, and women are heard screaming.

(HEBRON, West Bank) - Salem-News.com On the morning of 31 December 2009, the Israeli military, using a small Bobcat bulldozer, destroyed buildings belonging to the Sultan and al-Za'atari families in the Hebron neighborhood of al-Bweireh.

At the al-Za'atari house, the military destroyed a dovecote and the stables where the family kept their goats and horse.

Trucker Escapes Serious Injury After Being Pinned Inside Overturned Semi

Police say it happened north of Medford on Interstate-5.

(MEDFORD, Ore.) - Overturned truck near Medford 1-10-09 Despite having a leg pinned inside an overturned commercial truck for about one hour, a commercial truck driver was not seriously injured Sunday after his truck overturned on Interstate 5.

The crash scene on Interstate 5 at milepost 26, involved two vehicles in separate crashes.

Cord Vonderahe, Battalion Chief with Salem Fire, says crews rolled to the scene at 1:15 a.m. Sunday. The four-unit apartment complex had been evacuated by the time of their arrival.

Couple Arrested in Murder of 3-Year Old Child in Sandy

Four additional children of the arrested couple were taken by Child Custody officials.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - 27-year old Donald L. Cockrell and 24-year old Michelle N. Smith were arrested on Murder charges in Oregon 1-10-09 Clackamas County Sheriff's Office investigators continued their investigation of the the death of a three-year-old child in Sandy that was reported Saturday. Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Spokesman, Det. Jim Strovink, says officials are not releasing the name of the child.

Investigators say the child lived at the residence with the biological father, 27-year old Donald L. Cockrell.

Motorhome Destroyed by Fire at I-5 Rest Area

The RV owner was able to get out safely and rescued his cat in the process.

(JEFFERSON, Ore.) - Motorhome fire in Oregon 1-10-09 A 1979 Dodge Explorer motor home was destroyed Sunday afternoon by a fire that started in the engine compartment, according to Elizabeth Jones with the Jefferson Fire District.

Firefighters responded at 1:23 p.m. to the incident at the rest area near exit 241 on I-5 northbound. Jones says the motor home, owned by Washington resident Charles Rogers, was heavily involved when firefighters arrived on scene.

Partisan Bias Taints MLK Legacy

Is inflicting pain the newest social sport?

(SALEM, Ore.) - Dr. Martin Luther King addressing thousands With Martin Luther King Day soon to arrive, we as a nation are seeing exacerbated bias and namecalling on the basis of political belief. There is a distinct lack of real civil discourse. In its place lurks the demon of partisan bigotry--that's for certain.

One wonders how Dr. King would have addressed this divisive issue.
