Robert J. O'Dowd Salem-News.com
Marine veteran remembers a senior drill instructor who was awarded the Navy Cross with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (the “Walking Dead”) in Vietnam and later killed at Con Thien, RVN, in September 1967.
(SOMERDALE, N.J.) -
Racial prejudice was the norm when I arrived at Paris Island as a new Marine recruit 48 years ago. To this day, it’s hard to believe that Jettie Rivers wasn't affected by the abuse he experienced growing up in Alabama and Tennessee.
Jettie Rivers was an extremely fair, disciplined man in an environment where others often stepped across the line. In 1962, this was exceptional behavior for a Marine Corps drill instructor.

The Teros: Scarecrow of Argentina
By Gail Parker Salem-News.com
If I were not a pacifist I would suggest to my crack shot husband a new BB gun for Christmas.
(PATAGONIA, Argentina) -
The teros, the southern lapwing, are beautiful, plentiful and noisy. They screech like you are killing their mother; like they are calling your mother up short for ever conceiving you.
Well now, I have the same to say to them. After gardening my whole life in small places and never planting corn I finally did this year. But not with just any corn, with that special short corn that is fast-growing enough to beat the climate here in our little pocket of the Andes.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) -
Nitroglycerine was discovered about 1860 containing all parts in one molecule and you readers must humor me and go along with this story.
Nitroglycerine (TNG) is also a heart medicine for angina or heart attacks. How come is very interesting. It is rather easily made if one is a chemist but the first chemist who did (1860) was very surprised when he dropped a flask of it and it exploded. WOW!

(EUGENE, Ore.) -
Opponents of fully-informed courageous action by our Oregon Legislature make the ultimate error in their ready reference to “Reaganism redux”.

Tim King Salem-News.com
Money from Israel is closely tied to all of the major networks and newspapers that ignore the plight of Gaza.

Afghanistan: Photo Journal is a Flashback to Circa 1970
Story by Tim King Photosgrapher Unknown
I have been showing these to people for years and thought I should just publish them so everyone can have an idea what Afghanistan looked like before three decades of war.
(KABUL/SALEM) -
When I was in Afghanistan covering the war during the winter of 2006/2007, I heard about a set of photographs showing Kabul and other parts of this war torn country in a more peaceful time, probably around 1970.
When these photos were taken, Afghanistan was a Communist country and religion was suppressed.
