Taxing Work

While employers technically pay the unemployment insurance tax, economists generally agree that workers ultimately pay it through reduced wages.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Tax hike This January, a hidden tax increase will penalize almost every employee and employer in Oregon. Due to the recent high unemployment rate, State payroll taxes, which fund the unemployment insurance system, will increase from an average of 1.97% of base wages to 2.76%.

In other words, assuming you make at least $31,300 (before taxes), your employer will have to pay an additional $269, for a total of $886 next year. Over time, higher payroll taxes may make Oregon's economy worse.

McMinnville Police Investigate Death of Six-Year Old girl

An examination of the victim by the State Medical Examiner's office is scheduled for today.

(MCMINNVILLE, Ore.) - Ambulance McMinnville Police and Fire Departments responded to 600 NE Summerfield Street December 2nd over a report that a 6-year old female child was unconscious and not breathing.

Shortly after arrival ar 5:06 p.m., medical and law enforcement personnel learned that the 6-year old had been found with items around her neck strangling her.

Unidentified Male Body Found in Surf at Yachats

"There was no identification found on the body which appeared to have been in the water for several days" -OSP Sergeant Justin McGladrey

(YACHATS, ore.) - Death investigation Police on the Oregon coast say the body of an unidentified adult male was found in the surf lane Thursday morning north of Yachats.

Oregon State Police are investigating the discovery of the human remains, with the assistance of the Lincoln County Medical Examiner.

Two Storms to Descend on California

Landslides and mudflow could be disastrous in burn areas.

(LOS ANGELES) - California rain AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Ken Clark reported in his blog that a stormy pattern is descending on California, bringing two storms, one of Sunday through Monday, the other on Wednesday and Thursday.

Rain and snow will break out in northern California Sunday night and spread rapidly south late Sunday night and Monday. Snow levels are likely to be only 1,000 feet in the north, about 1,500 to 2,000 feet around the Bay Area to the Central Coastal Mountains, and down to 3,500 to 4,500 feet from the Los Angeles County Mountains to San Diego.

DOD Task Force On Sexual Assault Submits Findings, Recommendations

The task force based its assessment on data collected over a 15-month period at 60 sites around the world.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Salem-News.com The DoD Task Force on Sexual Assault in the Military Services recently submitted its congressionally-mandated report to the secretary of defense.

The report finds DoD has made progress in improving the response to victims' needs, but calls for DoD to do more to fully address the spectrum of sexual assault prevention and response.

Keller Many Americans woke up this morning and turned on the television or searched the internet to find out the latest on Tiger Woods and his wrecked black Cadillac Escalade. However, on this rainy morning in Northern Virginia, another black Cadillac meandered through rolling hills on hallowed ground.

This vehicle carried Medal of Honor recipient, Sergeant Leonard B. Keller, to his final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery.

Headquarters for the business will remain in New York. The joint venture board will have three directors nominated by Comcast and two nominated by GE.

(NEW YORK) - NBC logo Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA, CMCSK) and General Electric (NYSE: GE) announced today that they have signed a definitive agreement to form a joint venture that will be 51 percent owned by Comcast, 49 percent owned by GE and managed by Comcast.

The joint venture, which will consist of the NBC Universal (NBCU) businesses and Comcast’s cable networks, regional sports networks and certain digital properties and certain unconsolidated investments, will be well positioned to compete in an increasingly dynamic and competitive media and digital environment.
