America the Prude
Daniel Johnson Salem-News.com
America! Wake up and get a life. Sometimes people swear. Get over it.
(CALGARY, Alberta) -
As a society, America is in a parlous condition. One of the principle causes, I think, is the inability of Americans as a people to face reality. That, coupled with an incredible hypocrisy has brought America low. Two egregious examples. No one can forget, even if they never saw it (I didn’t), Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” (the term, used in all seriousness, sounds like something that would emerge from a Monty Python skit) and secondly Bono, receiving a Golden Globes Award in 2003 was so delighted that he said . "This is really, really f------ brilliant." The context and the great smile on his face makes clear that his comment is neither profane or obscene.
Try telling that to all the “concerned” citizens whose main “concern” is to impose their small-minded, backward-looking, Puritanism on the entire nation. The tragedy to this is that the majority of Americans just roll over and let them do it.

AMP Condemns Settler Attack on al Aqsa Worshipers (PHOTOS)
Salem-News.com
AMP calls on President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Middle East Special Envoy George Mitchell as they work toward establishing peace talks to hold Israel accountable for the most recent attack on al Aqsa worshipers.
(PALOS HILLS, Ill.) -
On Sunday, the eve of the Jewish holiday of atonement and repentance, a group of Israeli settlers – people living illegally on Palestinian land – stormed the al Aqsa mosque compound under the protection of Israeli police.
At least 40 worshippers were injured when Israeli police fired high-velocity tear gas canisters and used their batons against the crowd, which protested the settlers’ attack.
The American Muslims for Palestine strongly condemns the attacks by settlers and police in what has become a nearly annual occurrence at Yom Kippur.

Military Drug Abuse: It Can`t Function Without It
Dr, Phil Leveque Salem-News.com
If the troops are not getting enough sleep and rest that they must use these stimulants, there is something glaringly wrong with the guys who wear stars on their shoulders.
(MOLALLA, Ore.) -
The Oregonian reported this on Sept. 7, 2009. This should surprise nobody. Recruits historically are TRAINED to use alcohol and tobacco from their first weeks in boot camp, at least in the Army. If it wasn’t for the beer tranquilizer in the PX the rookies probably couldn’t survive psychologically the crap which is shoveled on them. There’s gotta be some psychological escape if even for a few hours. On hourly(?) breaks, “smokum if you gottum” is almost biblical. Ok, do they still do that same crap now?

Israel Keeps Shooting the Messenger
Opinion by Haroon Siddiqui Special to Salem-News.com
Israel's attack on Gaza strongly impacted the Palestinian solidarity movement around the world, which is essentially a successor to the South African anti-apartheid campaign that was also waged globally.
(TORONTO) -
In trying to discredit Richard Goldstone's UN report on the Israeli attack on Gaza, Israel and its supporters are shooting the messenger, says another high-profile Jewish public intellectual critical of Israeli policies on Palestinians.
Richard Falk, professor emeritus in international law at Princeton University and prolific author, is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Last December, he was expelled from Israel after characterizing the crippling Israeli economic blockade of Gaza (in effect since 2007) as collective punishment, amounting to "a crime against humanity."

Frances Oldham Kelsey, PhD, MD An American Hero
Marianne Skolek Salem-News.com
Time to slow down and honor those who made a difference, before the big pharmaceutical companies had control.
(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) -
For those not familiar with the name Frances Oldham Kelsey, she became nationally famous in 1962 when she prevented the sedative drug Thalidomide from entering the United States. Thalidomide was found to have caused birth defects in 10,000 European children in the late 1950s and early 1960s. For preventing an American Thalidomide tragedy, Kelsey was awarded the government's highest civilian award, the President's Distinguished Federal Civilian Service Award.
Kelsey's civil service career began in August, 1960, when she became a medical officer for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). After one month on the job, Kelsey was asked to review what was expected to be a simple and routine marketing application for Thalidomide. Thalidomide, a sleep inducer, had been developed in West Germany in the 1950s, and was widely marketed in Europe; belief in its safety was so widespread that the drug was available without prescription.
