Crime and Punishment

Our society is pathologically distorted by money. Even the crime and punishment. Other than that, your opinion is as good as mine.

Considering that most crime is committed for money—either directly or indirectly—a little exploration might be both fun, educational—and discouraging.

Oregon Passes Hemp Bill: Sixth US State to Say Yes to Hemp in 2009

Oregon becomes the sixth state in 2009 to take control; pressure to grow hemp continues to mount as business booms.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Capitol Today, by a vote of 46 to 11, the Oregon House passed SB 676, a bill that permits production and possession of industrial hemp and trade in industrial hemp commodities and products.

"I am glad that Oregon has joined the list of states that have agreed that American farmers should have the right to re-introduce industrial hemp as an agricultural crop," says SB 676 sponsor, Sen. Floyd Prozanski.

Salem House Was a `Backstop for Bullets` During Sunday Shooting (VIDEO)

Deputies talked to the residents at 4899 Pennsylvania and learned the residence had 10 children and one adult inside of at the time of the shooting.

(SALEM, Ore.) - police cars Marion County Sheriff\'s deputies are investigating a shooting that occurred over the weekend. Witnesses say shots rang out early Sunday around 1:45 a.m. in the 4800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE in Salem.

The shooter, according to Lt. Sheila Lorance with the Marion County Sheriff\'s Office, was probably not firing at anyone in the house. They believe the bullets were intended for a person outside the duplex.

(SWEET HOME, Ore.) - Oregon Wildland Firefighter training It's hard to underestimate the importance of fire safety in a state like Oregon. This week, in preparation for the upcoming summer fire season, students are learning the finer points of wildland firefighting and honing their skills, until they get it right.

Paul Heibert, the incident commander at the wildland firefighter school, says a lot of the work is standardized training. "It's done nationally and we don't have a lot of wiggle room as far as what we teach them. which I'd say is a good thing. So three of the five days we have the mandatory stuff and the rest of it we have some play."

Military forces take their own President captive in this Central American country.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Soldier in Honduras Honduran President Jose Manuel "Mel" Zelaya is in Costa Rica after losing control of the country during a coup d'etat Sunday led by Army soldiers.

His drive to see Honduras host Democratic elections led to the revolt. The political position he took ultimately placed him at odds with the military, the courts and the legislature.

Crash closes down Salem's early morning freeway traffic as one driver flees the scene.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Crash in Salem, Oregon 6-28-09 A Salem man received critical injuries in a three vehicle crash on Interstate - 5 near milepost 255 in Salem. OSP troopers and Salem Police were dispatched at 4:45 a.m. to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate - 5 near milepost 255 at State Street.

OSP Sergeant Dale Young says a 1999 Lincoln Navigator, driven by 26-year old Jose Zendejas of Salem, was southbound on Interstate-5 after having just entered the freeway from Market St in Salem.

Clackamas County Search & Rescue Successfully Rescues Injured Climber on Mount Hood

The patient was airlifed to Emanuel Hospital‏ by an Oregon National Guard helicopter.

(MOUNT HOOD, Ore.) - Oregon`s Mount Hood Search and Rescue personnel on Mount Hood have successfully rescued a patient with a broken leg from the Sandy Glacier area.

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Jim Strovink, says the patient is being airlifted by an Oregon National Guard helicopter from Mount Hood and transported directly to Emanuel Hospital, in Portland.

He says the patient is 27-year old Kristopher R. Haskins of the Seattle, Washington area where he is employed by the University of Washington, in Seattle.
