Your office, Mr. Kerlikowske, does not offer protection from the truth. Maintaining the drug war's lies has cost far too many innocent lives, and ended or destroyed the lives of far too many of our police officers.

So, I opened up my Funk & Wagnalls... flipped... through the pages... to... "L." Sure enough, right there on page 772 - "legalize." And in noun form, "legalization." To make legal.

Salem World Beat 2009 Underway at Riverfront Park (VIDEO)

The Dragonboat races happen Sunday; this is one of Salem's top events each year.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem shows its best each summer at the World Beat Festival. It is possible that this may be one of the only ways to really sample the diversity of world culture in Salem, in a single place.

In fact it was during the summer of 2006, while covering the World Beat Festival, that I learned what Salem even means.

The word varies a bit depending upon the part of the world you happen to be visiting, but salem means 'peace' and I found that to be a nice piece of knowledge.

Clackamas County Sheriff`s Investigators Identify Stabbing Victim Who Remains In Critical Condition

Detectives have identified a suspect in this case and are actively seeking to arrest 30-year old Casey James Hatch.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - Casey James Hatch Clackamas County Sheriff's Office investigators are now have identified a stabbing victim that was assaulted late last night on SE Jannsen Road, in Clackamas.

This victim is identified as 35-year old Elijah Stanley Antosh of Vancouver, Washington. Elijah Antosh remains hospitalized at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital, in Portland, according to Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Spokesman, Det. Jim Strovink.

Body Found in Detroit Lake Identified as 60-Year Old Idanha Man‏

From all indications it appears the victim suffered from a medical issue and fell into the lake while fishing.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Death investigation The Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a body in Detroit Lake near the Breitenbush River Friday. Lt. Sheila Lorance says fishermen found the body and immediately called 911.

"When deputies arrived, they were able to remove the body from the lake and it was identified as 60-year old Harold Buckles of Idanha," Lorance said.

According to his family, Mr. Buckles went fishing on June 22nd, 2009, four days earlier, and had not been seen since.

Obama Administration Awards nearly $17 Million for Oregon’s State Energy Program

Funding Will Speed Adoption of Efficiency and Renewable Energy Technologies for Oregon

(WASHINGTON, DC) - US President Barack Obama U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced $16.8 million in Recovery Act funding to support energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in Oregon.

Under DOE’s State Energy Program, Oregon proposed a statewide plan that prioritizes energy savings, creates or retains jobs, increases the use of renewable energy, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

This initiative is part of the Obama Administration’s national strategy to support job growth, while making a historic down payment on clean energy and conservation.

House Increases Penalties for Crimes Against Pregnant Women

“We must, as a Legislature, make sure that our prosecutors have the tools in place to deal swiftly and surely with those who commit violence against pregnant women” - State Rep. Vicki Berger

(SALEM, Ore.) - pregnant women The Oregon House on Wednesday passed legislation increasing penalties for crimes against pregnant women.

House Bill 3505-A would require a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for murder against a pregnant woman. Second degree assault charges would be moved up to first degree assault. Fourth degree assault, currently a misdemeanor, would be charged as a Class C felony.

Bill to Raise Age of Sex Abuse Victims Moves Through Legislature

After clearing the House, House Bill 2827 will go to Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski to be signed into law.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com A bill that would raise the age of sex abuse victims in Oregon from 24 to 40 will likely become law. The future of House Bill 2827 appeared bleak when we wrote about it May 28th 2009.

Bill Crane from the group SNAP, (Survivors Network of people Abused by Priests) says it is a good day in Oregon and while cautious, he agrees that it is good news on a day that could use it.

Cultural icon Michael Jackson passes away in Los Angeles.

(LOS ANGELES) - Michael Jackson American pop idol and superstar Michael Jackson died today in Los Angeles from apparent cardiac arrest. Though he has been the subject of years of reports relating to alleged sexual improprieties, Jackson will always be known as a cultural icon who inspired millions of Americans and had so many hit songs that naming them will require a great deal of space.

Michael Joseph Jackson was born August 29th 1958 into what became an American musical family. Throughout his lifetime he was a recording artist, entertainer, and businessman.

Amber Alert Issued Over 11-Year Old California Girl in Extreme Danger

Anyone with information is asked to call the Salinas Police Department at 831-758-7321 or dial 911.

(SALINAS, Calif.) - Special thanks to Salinas Police for these images of the missing girl, Maria Roldan, and suspect Joventino Benegas. An AMBER Alert has been issued for an 11-year old California girl missing out of Salinas, who is reportedly in danger.

The State of California issued the Amber Alert Thursday afternoon at 1:39 p.m. after the girl was reportedly abducted earlier in the day from her home in Salinas.

Police in Salinas say the child is believed to be in extreme danger. Maria Roldan an 11 year old Hispanic female, 5' tall, 116 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.
