Senate Votes to Shut Down Abusive Puppy Mills

HB 2470 passes final legislative vote, on its way to Governor.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Coming on the heels of yet another high-profile puppy mill bust in the Northwest, the Senate voted this morning in support of House Bill 2470, a bill that limits breeders to owning no more that 50 sexually intact dogs 2 years or older.
“Passing this bill will create one of the most effective and comprehensive puppy mill laws in the nation,” said Senator Diane Rosenbuam (D-Portland), who carried the bill on the floor. “We’ve seen story after story describing deplorable conditions in these puppy mills. This legislation will give us the ability to crack down on the inhumane treatment of animals.”

The group Stop Genocide Now reports that one of the refugee camps in Chad has been bombed.
"Not only is Al-bashir embolden enough to starve his own people by expelling the aid organizations he is now bombing them, AGAIN," they report. The group's Alysha Atma has drafted an open letter to President Obama seeking help for the people there.

Gas Prices Up Sharply in a Month with National Average Surpassing $2.50

The national average jumped ten cents in the past week to nearly $2.53, while Oregon's average for regular unleaded gains more than eight cents to $2.60.
(PORTLAND, Ore.) -
Pump prices are at a seven-month high. The national average passes the $2.50 a gallon mark, jumping ten cents in the past week to nearly $2.53.
Several factors are helping to spur crude's climb, including heavy investments based on confidence of a turnaround in the global economy, a weaker dollar, and comments by OPEC that there are signs of a recovery in oil demand, particularly in Asia.

Boaters on the lower North Santiam River should use caution on the section between Green’s Bridge and Jefferson. Two different areas have collected large amounts of debris which can cause serious danger to river traffic.

FBI Releases Preliminary 2008 Crime Stats for Oregon and Washington

In Oregon and Southwest Washington, we are seeing a mixed bag of results. Statistics from the report include the following:
(PORTLAND, Ore.) -
Today, the FBI released a preliminary report detailing January - December 2008 crime data based on the submissions of 12,750 law enforcement agencies in the U.S.
Each of these agencies had to submit at least six comparable months of data to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program in both 2007 and 2008. Nationally, both violent and property crimes saw decreases of 2.5% and 1.6% respectively.

Air France Plane Missing

The plane's crew reported an electric failure and loss of cabin pressure and was lost in a region of the world known for intense tropical storms and lightning.
(PARIS) -
An Air France plane has disappeared while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. There were 228 people aboard the plane included several children.
Air France says they express their deepest sympathy to the relatives and friends of the passengers and crew who were on board AF flight 447 on 31 May 2009, which disappeared somewhere between Rio de Janeiro and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

Tobacco Use ‘Needless Threat’ to Public Health, Says UN Secretary-General

The World Health Organization said that effective health warnings, especially those that include pictures, have been proven to motivate users to quit and to reduce the appeal of tobacco for those who are not yet addicted.
(GENEVA) -
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged governments everywhere to address tobacco consumption, which he described as a “needless threat” to public health.
In a message to mark World No Tobacco Day, observed on May 31st, Mr. Ban noted that every year, some 5.4 million people die from illnesses caused by tobacco consumption, 80 per cent of them in low- and middle-income countries. Left unchecked, tobacco-related deaths will rise to more than 8 million by 2030.
