Wyden, Merkley Announce Funding To Improve Access to Mental Health Treatment for Rural Veterans

Program will reach out to veterans in Bend, The Dalles, Eugene, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, and other communities.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Washinton D.C. U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced today that the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center will receive $1.9 million to improve mental health treatment for veterans in rural Oregon.

“As more and more of our veterans confront the sometimes severe mental health effects of serving in a very dangerous environment, we must commit to providing the best possible treatment to get these men and women back on their feet,” Wyden said.

If you men don’t have men friends that you can really talk to about your life, then get out there and find them. Start your own group at a local coffee house, away from the women, or through your church or synagogue.

When a man reaches a certain age and he’s depressed, he’s struggling with his place in the world, he’s going through family problems or a divorce, or financial and job worries, etc., where can he turn?

Add into the mix that he’s a single dad and has no immediate family around and you have my situation, a few years ago.

Police Investigate Injury Crash on I-84 Near Warrendale (PHOTOS)

The driver of the BMW may have been released from the hospital later this same day, remarkably.

(WARRENDALE, Ore.) - I-84 car crash Police say the driver of a car that crashed Thursday morning into a guardrail on Interstate 84 near Warrendale is believed to have had a medical-related problem.

Oregon State Police Lieutenant Gregg Hastings, spokesman for the agency, says around 7:15 a.m. Thursday, a 1996 BMW four-door driven by 66-year old Gary D. Robb of northeast Portland, was eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 37 in the left lane when he reportedly suffered a medical emergency.

Truck Crash Spills Glass Blocking Highway 22 West of Detroit

Clean-up efforts may continue into Friday morning.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Crash Investigation Clean up efforts are underway following a minor injury commercial truck rollover crash on Highway 22 about four miles west of Detroit. The truck was transporting sheets of mirrored glass that spilled onto the highway.

Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Doug Brown says at approximately 4:00 p.m. a commercial truck driven by Dave Chavez, whose age was not available, of Cave Junction, lost control and rolled, spilling the load of glass onto the highway.

UN Deplores Campaign of Violence Against Somali Government

The Security Council has condemned the recent resurgence in fighting in the Horn of Africa nation, and called for the end of all hostilities.

(MOGADISHU) - UN Security Council unanimously adopts resolution 1872 Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today strongly condemned the continuing armed attacks against Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government, expressing concern at the growing numbers of civilians killed, wounded and displaced by the violence.

Intense fighting between the Government and the opposition Al-Shabaab and Hisb-ul-Islam groups erupted in several north-west areas of the capital, Mogadishu, on 8 May, uprooting over 67,000 people, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Wildfire Season for 2009 Looms: Officials Issue Expectations & Preparations

Rod Nichols with the Oregon's Forestry Department says current conditions suggest that the state will experience an average to slightly worse-than-average wildfire season in 2009.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon wildfire file photo When asked to characterize the upcoming wildfire season, Oregon Department of Forestry fire managers are likely to fall back on Nobel physicist Niels Bohr's maxim, "Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future."

That's not to say they don't try. There are dozens of scientific indicators to pore over prior to the summer – weather trends (El Nino/La Nina), snowpack levels, forest fuel moisture content, et al. But the most critical factor in the equation plays out real-time: the weather during fire season.
